how to clean up slow PC?

suiko - ref your dual antivirus issue....I'd ditch AVG and stick with avast. Also, to boot up better, disable avast's on-startup memory scan. It's in theprogram settings, the first screen of options (Common), and untick it. That should help no end..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Its more than likely due to the 'start up' files youve stopped
Don't think so - this was happening before I tried doing stuff to speed up the system (in fact all the time since I've had broadband!).
Get in touch with the provider... that's what I'm dreading. Really don't fancy another 4 hours spent trying to get through to those poor guys and girls in Mumbai.0 -
Do you have any form of Norton or Symantec products on your system?
They can cause allsorts of illogical problems these days....0 -
I can fully sympathise with you! I'm with TT too and despaired with their customer services! Have you tried asking on the TT forums about your prob? I had months of problems before I tried this and help came immediately and they were ringing me and sorting it all out... bonus too - No talking to poor Mumbai residents, all done in the UK! If you haven't tried it, the link is http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums/ . I too am unsure which programs to disable at startup and wonder if I have caused a problem within Windows by doing so... My Pictures is now not functioning how it was... could it be connected?

I had an old version of Symantec, but I definitely disabled it on startup and fairly sure I uninstalled it too.
Kate - maybe you disabled your picture editing software at at startup, and that's why it's not recognising My Pictures? Only a guess...
Will try the TT forum too, thanks!0 -

If its any help, my pc was running as poorly as yours and i've just paid a guy to do exactly what jesthar has suggested. Its now running great. I just wish i'd posted on here first
hi nibs (or anyone else who knows!)
roughly how much does this cost, as my DD1's desktop is only 2 yr old, but runs so slowly! No doubt she has loads of stuff on there that she doesnt need, but i am so un-technical that i wouldnt dare try it myself!0 -
Sorry to ask but could someone guide me on which ones to disable on startup? my pc is running slow lately too thanks
Clicky
try this:
http://sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
*As you can see from the extensive list of possibilities - a specific answer can't be given without a screen shot of your current startup list*0 -
If you need an idea of what needs to be disabled at Start Up, you should firstly post the spec of your machine.
This is found by pressing the Flying Windows key together with the Pause Break key and giving us all of the details found under System and Computer.
Next, download, install, update and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Running a Quick Scan should be enough for now. Remove whatever the scan finds, by making sure the boxes are ticked and clicking Remove.
Lastly, install HiJackThis and produce a Log file of your Start Up list and reprint it here. Instructions here and here.
If you find that you cannot follow these simple instructions, think about getting help.0 -
aliEnRIK,
When i checked the C Drive it says:
Used Space - 70.5 GB
Free Space - 78.4 GB
Capacity - 149 GB
There is option to Disk Clean up (worried about these as never know what to get rid of!)
Also Compress disk to save more space.
We have AVG running for viruses & its up to date.
