The easiest way to disable start up programs is through the software itself (msn for example)
Or use ccleaner ~ Tools ~ Start Up (Just make sure its SAFE to turn off first ~ dont want to be stopping any 'needed' drivers)

As has already been said though the best way is usually clean up the hard drive (IF its getting full) and the major one is MORE MEMORY. Both XP AND Vista need at LEAST 1 gig of Ram (Id recommend 2 for Vista though) to be pretty efficient

    To defrag I recommend DEFRAGGLER

Its WAY better than Vistas built in one (And about 3 others ive tried!)

I was just saying you can also disable START UP programs with it(No one seems to use that feature for some reason)

Thanks - you guys are brilliant!

Another thing... I recently got broadband (Talk Talk) and bought a wireless router and USB adaptor. It works, just about, but each time I turn the PC on I have to go through all the business of using the Talk Talk help software (and rekeying in the really long WEP number!) before I finally get a connection. Any ideas why this is?

Its probably because IMO talktalk are crap (long story!). Is it a Talktalk modem or another make? If its a talktalk one make sure you save the configuration if you turn the modem off when not in use.

The modem is a talktalk one, yes, with Netgear USB adaptor. How do you save the configuration?

guys, the startup tool in spybot s&d also works a treat, I tend to use that rather than the ccleaner one
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Thanks. I've followed all those steps (apart from total reinstall). It is loads quicker, but here is a problem. The sytsem is now really unstable - it freezes frequently, while using Word and Internet, and I have to just turn off at mains, as neither the mouse nor Ctrl + Alt + Del etc respond. Any ideas why this could be?

Have you disabled some 'start up' program you shouldnt have? Or used spybots 'tea timer' to block something you shouldnt have?
Youve not got 2 programs running in unison have you? 2 firewalls or 2 anti virus programs are a BIG no no!

Thanks. But how do I know which startup programs to re-enable? I figured it might be something to do with this, but wasn't sure what to re-enable.

I have avast, Grisoft AVG, Sybot, Adaware... what should I uninstall?
