  • Their premium meusli at £1.49 is by far the very best around. I would challenge anyone to beat it. Not too sweet with a good varied selection of fruit and nut. AND at such a low cost!
  • At Lidl they sometimes have Aubergines on sale for half price. Usually they are 89p but sometimes they sell them for 43p

Does anyone know when they go on sale?

Also, does anyone know anywhere else I can get cheap aubergines?

    Netto offers that are good
Febreeze at the minte is £1.49 with 50% extra free
They have bags of yummy mint humbugs for 45p
Needing to lose weight start date 26 December 2011 current loss 60 pound Down. Lots more to go to get into my size 6 jeans
  • Also, does anyone know anywhere else I can get cheap aubergines?

Any Asian quarter in any city - head for the local Asian supermarket
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • I have been shopping at ALDI for about 18 months as it is quicker and easier to get round with a toddler than the bigger supermarkets. I was amazed by how much my shopping bill reduced without compromising on quality. My top buys are:-
Frozen lamb shanks in mint sauce :T
Summerlite olive spread (same as Olivio)
Diet red thunder (like diet Red Bull)
    Dreamy (same as milky ways)
    British sausages
Fresh orange juice (cheapest of any supermarket)
Curry sauces in jars - read the labels some are very low in fat
    Parma ham
Lasagne from chilled fridges (made with Pork not beef)
    Aloe Vera toilet tissue
Pull up nappies - have never leaked unlike big brand pull ups
    Shower cremes and liquid soaps
    Dishwasher tablets
Bakery - muffins, part baked bagettes, bagels
    Village Bakery brown wholemeal bread
    Extra Virgin olive oil
    Eggs
    Wotsit style crisps
    Aldi version of weetabix

    Avoid:-

    Diet coke
    Strawberries & grapes deteriorate quickly
Oven chips - not as good as the branded ones
Flowers - look a bit battered
Aldi version of fruit shoots - detested by my kids
Aldi version of Special K with berries - too many berries, very tarty

I wish Aldi would introduce baskets, decaffinated tea bags, and bring back the salt and black pepper crisps!:j
  • Supermarket: LIDL.

Products I'd recommend for price and quality compared to Asda/Tesco/Morrisons etc.

    Soft Drinks
    Canned Tomatoes
Baked Beans (as good as Crosse & Blackwells)
Beef Ravioli (large can) (Better than Heinz)
Large jar of Gherkins. (as good as local chippie)
Frozen chips. (2.5 kilos for 99p, cheaper than buying potatoes and chipping them!)
Marrowfat peas (as good as Farrows and cheaper!)
    Tinned carrots
    Most fresh fruit & veg
Traditional roast ham in various size packs
Frozen chicken Kievs (made in France, not Thailand!)
    Frozen veg
    Frozen quarter pounders
Roasted, salted cashew nuts 250g bags
    Crinkle cut crisps, large bag.
    Toilet rolls
    Kitchen rolls
    Welsh butter
    Mature cheddar cheese
    Cheese slices
All Gellatelli ice creams (10 times better than Walls, Lyons etc! and half the price!)
Hobgoblin strong ale, buy 5 for the price of 4 works out @ £1.14 per 500ml
    compared to Asda's 3 for £4 (£1.33 per 500ml)
    Printer cartridge refills
    T-shirts and other clothing
Also look out for weekly special offers

There are not many items I dislike in Lidl but theyn could improve the texture of their thick sliced 37p loaves of bread, but then compare the price to greedy Asda/Tesco/Morrisons/Sainsburys cartel instore bakeries and you save over 90p per loaf.

I asked in Asda why the price of their bread had rocketed over the last year and was told that it was because of the rising cost of wheat, but they still sell packs of 6 crusty rolls for 37p - the price they were a year ago!
A different kind of wheat perhaps?:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::T
  • Generally, everything is hot, great value and the only things I haven't liked have been a mistunderstanding of the tin by me.

But 1 excellent buy is their Non Bio soap powder - about £5 for a huge box and it's really good.

All cleaning stuff / toiletrys are well cheap and never aggrivate anyones skin in our house

    cheers

I find lidl amazing value for fresh fruit and veg. There are always offers on and the Lidls around me usually have the half price fruit & veg offer twice a month. I also find the fruit lasts longer as it isn't refrigerated in store.
  • Our Aldi top buys,
specially selected Columbian Coffee - OK its instant rather than high class ground stuff - but we like it.
the Carlos Pizza range is brill, especially the Tarte Fin ones

and the specially selected fudge - just wonderful

New range of flavoured instant risottos - just add a slug of white wine instead of part of the water on the instructions - very nice

Ready to roast chicken crown with stuffing - feeds 4 quite well.

Not been disappointed with any of the fish, and the Frosty ice cream takes some beating.

The Saint Etienne lager is good value, and tastes like Stella does when you buy it in Belgium.

    What not to Buy...
some of the veg is a bit hit and miss - you've got to give it a thorough check over before in the store, and eat it quick when you get home.
Some of the potato snacks are a bit like biodegradable packaging material - edible, but not by choice!

Generally the list of what we don't buy from Aldi has got shorter over the last couple of years, and in some areas I think they wipe the floor with the other supermarket own brands.
