  • NOt sure I understand you there, you can but HDD recorders with DVD recorders already, Panasonic DMR-E100 for example, how are they no good for archiving(not sure what context you are meaning?)

Sorry Woby t'was late and I am locked in "cheapo Sky+, mode" , ie a Freeview box with pvr(hdd). None at mo have the ability to archive without adding another box, whether it be VHS or DVD (and who would want to archive to tape these days). They are basically watch'n'wipe boxes.
The ideal set-up would be to have Freeview/Cable box/ or Sky as tuner, hdd for time shift/watch'n'wipe/maybe edit, with DVD recorder to archive to or record films or special events direct. All in the same box.

I know that JVC, Panasonic and LG etc have hdd/dvd combos for around £500. BUT what is the point if the tuners are analogue. The hdd can only record to the quality of the incoming signal, like the point you made about VHS to DVD, at least the storage space is less.

I've heard the JVC DR-M10 has been recalled for a firmware upgrade and will not be available again to buy until mid April.

Does anyone know anything about this?

As stressed several times earlier on on this thread, the Liteon 5005 can easily be unlocked.

    Heip Help Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just bought the Liteon 5005 thinking I could easily turn it from a Zone 2 to a Zone Free. I used the hack code mentioned several times in previous threads but the sub-menu that should pop up after entering the codes just flickered on for a fraction of a second without me being able to change the zone. Mine was made in Oct 2004. Can anyone help is there a new code for models made in Oct 2004

not sure if this is what you've already tried

    To make 5005 region free.
Switch on player without disc in tray
    Press SETUP
    Highlight EXIT then press 2,9,6,0
Press RIGHT and select REGION FREE and press ENTER
Then press LEFT back to highlight EXIT and press SETUP to finish.

otherwise can only suggest reading places like this

and completing the firmware updates instead(though this is more riskier)

Thank you. I have just done it. I realized that I had not been pressing RiGHt after entering the numeric code. Many thanks you have saved the day.

others will disagree no doubt but Philips don't have the best reputation for reliability
  • I'm not sure about which dvd/recorder is best but i would strongly recommend not buying from ebuyer.

I bought my Liteon 5005 from argos with a £10 voucher that I used to purchase some DVD-RW discs. Not bad.
