Theloft, or is it Lofty
Here are a few sites to explore, to find your way forward through the maze.

I would wait a while, prices are less than half those of six months ago. Volume reduces costs, so expect to pay £69 soon,
Pvrs(hdd) only record from the internal tuners so are no good for archiving. Pvr's are soon to arrive with built in dvd players (but Not as yet dvd recorders unfortunately which is the next logical development)
You pay for quality and hi-tech, so the choice is yours.Moi....?
Martin asked me to say I'm a volunteer Board Guide on the Utilities board, facilitating its smooth running. I can move & change posts there. However I do not read every post.

Thanks SCat ((or is it Scat!!)
I will look at the sites mentioned, thanks a bunch. Why is it that technology gets more complicated instead of simpler, at least that's the way it seems for old duffers like me. It is the same with the Internet, started out with a simple modem, now you have to have virus protection, Firewalls, Spyware, etc. etc. and now it seems DVD Recorders are a minefield for the uninitiated. It was a lot easier with the old piano key VHS Recorders !!

This thread has been very useful, I am thinking about getting a DVD recorder, but does anyone know how to record from a TV / Video combo unit? I tried the Liteon 5005, but I couldn't have the video channel and the DVD at the same time. Will I have to buy a separate VHS so that I link up yet another box into the system?
Thanks!0 -
HELP FROM AN EXPERT REQUIRED
I have ploughed through the last 3 pages and am still confused. Is there someone out there who could summarise the different options/features/costs/ drawbacks etc. of these Recorders...Good advice is hard to come by !!
I'm sorry you haven't found this thread at all helpful, unlike others who have made the exact opposite comment. I'm just a voluntary contributor, like everyone else. Beware of anyone who calls themself an 'expert'. You could try looking up audio-visual type consultancies in Yellow Pages but expect to pay a small fortune per hour. In my opinion, there's no substitute for putting in a bit of effort oneself, via search engines, etc.
Regards

NOt sure I understand you there, you can but HDD recorders with DVD recorders already, Panasonic DMR-E100 for example, how are they no good for archiving(not sure what context you are meaning?)0 -
Thanks George!! I was not saying the thread was unhelpful, just confusing for a non-techie like myself! If you browse back yourself, the thread jumps about as people express opinions on side issues. I was just hoping somebody who is well versed in these things could summarise the various options available etc.
You're probably right, about the thread jumping around. These DVD devices, and the various options and issues are quite complex to understand, I admit.
Here's a useful review, which may have been recommended here before. I can't remember where I found the link. It gives a useful mix of summary and detail:

Hi Guys
I've been reading this thread and feel I should make one major correction. It has been said that only DVD-RAM allows you to begin to watch a programme that you are part way through recording. I have the Sony RDR-GXR500 and I have this facility, as well as the ability to watch a programme I had previously recorded whilst recording another programme on that same disc. This player accepts + and - RW's, but these features are only availble using DVD-RW.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
