Same boat here. Don't like having Amex only in my wallet.

+1 here. Have the aqua for fuel + supermarket and 1.25% amex for most everything else, so admittedly not much left on what'll be a 0.5% card but I want to squeeze every penny back!

  • +1 here too... Barclaycard have the cheek to say it's simpler, now as someone who is trying to eliminate carrying a wallet, adding an extra card is a move in the opposite direction.

I'll probably stick around long enough to get the £15 bonus, then cancel the lot. Can't be doing with their 'freedom rewards' scheme on other cards, so looks like I'll be looking elsewhere.

I'm thinking the Amazon card looks the best for me at the moment. Will keep an eye on what other people find :-)

I've just had a letter today that Barclaycard are withdrawing their 'World' Mastercard, which was given to former Egg customers and has various insurance benefits and 1% cashback.

I just got the same today replacing my 'Top 5' Cashback card, which is a shame as it seemed like a pretty good deal until now.

Exactly the same spiel about 'making it simpler' but no mention of the £15 bonus?

(It does however imply that there'll no longer be limits on how much cashback you can accrue).

From a phone call to BC, no limit on how much cashback you can earn on the new cards.

Also, the £15 bonus was only offered to the ex-EGG customers and one other card (he didn't say which one)

    Cheers, Des.

I was similarly amused at Barclaycard making my card simpler, strangely I'd never found additional cashback and services that complicated!

I'm also thinking of going with the Amazon card as I spend a reasonable amount there anyway so will get a better 2% rate then no worse off with the 1% rate elsewhere. I've had a read through the cashback article but I can't see any particular downsides to the Amazon card, I never carry a balance on my credit card so the interest rates are no issue.

I've been meaning to get a second credit card anyway as Barclays have been irritating with blocking my credit card for buying a computer then problematic in getting it unblocked.

No downside that I'm aware of. Been with them for years. Decent customer service (probably better than the standard MBNA customer service on other MBNA cards), decentish cashback, can't find a better deal for general use.

Thanks for the recommendation, I went to apply but they want rather a lot of details of my employment most of which I don't mind but they insist on a work phone number which I can't provide as my contact number is for business only, I'm not allowed to give it out to other companies for personal use.

The resourceful would put down a mobile or home number.
If it goes to voicemail then so what?
Is this stopping you conitnuing with your application?

I did think about sticking a mobile number in as that's what I use to be contacted at work but I wanted to find why they need the number as clearly they're not going to be able to verify my employment with my mobile number.

So they can try and call you if you owe them money (and not paid it on time)

They do NOT call your employer to verify your employment status.
Think about it. How many employers are open on Sunday? Even if they did want to call them (which they don't) wouldn't they need to speak to the human resources department to verify your employment details, rather than you at your desk??? No responsible employer will give out personal details of their employee without that employee first giving permission to do so. Usually such references are only provided in writing.
