If part of my purchase at a supermarket is cash back, is that part of my purchase included for the 5% cash back. As far as I can see, Amex would only see the total amount charged to my card. Is that correct? You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...:cool:0

That's useful info. How would Amex find out that some of the transaction was cash back?
If you think about it, the reason they don't allow it is that they lose money. If you put your CC in a cash machine you get charged a handling fee and the interest you pay is higher. But if it's done through a supermarket checkout, you immediately benefit from no handling fee and lower interest.
Actually, thinking about it, can you withdraw cash from an ATM on Amex? You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...:cool:0 -
I think there are some points of confusion remaining from earlier posts re the Shell Citi Card. (Apologies if I have missed a subsequent answer - I did have a quick check through!)
1. If you buy fuel from petrol stations other than Shell, this falls into the "1% everywhere else" category, although of course you will have to buy from Shell at some point to actually claim the "cashback".
2. The fact that petrol is now under £1 per litre is irrelevant, you still get the same % cashback. I think they originally advertised it as 6 PENCE off per litre with a note that it was related to the cost per litre being at least £1 (because it was actually 6% not 6p).
3. Re an earlier post that Shell is rarely/never the cheapest - this is not my experience in many locations around the country, Shell is often on a par with supermarkets or maybe 1p more at most - certainly with a 3% discount it will be cheaper than anything apart from the occasional supermarkets' 5p special offer. I routinely find that Shell is cheaper than other non-supermarket petrol stations.
Although this isn't strictly a "cashback" card, if you buy from Shell anyway it is one of the best deals around so I'm surprised it isn't mentioned in the cashback or rewards credit cards articles.
With a Barclaycard Platinum card that gives me 2% off at all supermarkets and petrol stations, Shell giving me 3-6% off their petrol and 1% off everything else, and 3 months of buying with 5% cashback via Amex, I've made quite a nice bit of cash this year, just by buying what I would have bought anyway with some different pieces of plastic - thanks mostly to the advice on this site!I am not a beige person:D0 -
Why do Utility Warehouse employees insist on making single posts like this? You don't even offer a proper credit card, it's a hybrid that needs topping up and offers no consumer protection - as with other credit cards!
Get the hint and go away!
I agree with you on the employee thing, but your actually not quite right on the card. It is a prepaid mastercard, so you do get the same guarantee on purchases as you would do on any credit card. It does need topping up, but the cashback side is applied to your bill rather than put on the card. You save 5% at Sainsbury's on food and fuel, which Barclaycard don't offer, plus a load of mainstream retailers. Before you ask, no I don't work for them, I just know a lot about Cashback and reward cards. If you don't need the credit facility and you can use the rewards that these cards offer, then they are of use, and the majority are backed by either Visa or Mastercard - it's only Maestro you don't get the gurantee on.0 -
I phoned the Abbey to apply for their credit card which gives 3% cashback on petrol and shopping. They didn't offer the option of applying online so I had to phone them.
I immediately told the chap I was wanting to apply for the credit card that offers cashback on petrol. After 20 minutes of going through my application he finally put me on hold, then told me that that card had been discontinued just today.
I disputed with him, saying it was still being advertised on their site, which he acknowledged, but he said it can take 72 hours to change the website.
Here is the link to the relevant page: http://www.abbey.com/csgs/Satellite?appID=abbey.internet.Abbeycom&c=Page&canal=CABBEYCOM&cid=1210619568572&empr=Abbeycom&leng=en_GB&pagename=Abbeycom%2FPage%2FWC_ACOM_TemplateW2
Can they get away with this?
Any advice as to what I should do?0 -
Weano - don't forget that it's just a credit limit - there's nothing stopping you from paying it off earlier than the interest free period. I'm assuming that you would be paying it all off at the statement date anyway, otherwise you wouldn't be looking for a cashback card anyway.
That's what I did recently (last month) as I've recently bought a house, and been spending on furniture, bathrooms, kitchens etc. Max'ed the card in one (big) transaction alone, and paid it off straight away that night to ensure I would still be able to use the card, and continue to gain cashback.
So, I suppose I am saying that just because it's £700 a month, doesn't mean that you can only spend 3 x £700 in the 3 month cashback period. It does however mean you can't spend more than £700 on a single transaction (without pre-loading first).
Once you've done that a couple of times (paid off mid-month), then you may find that they are more amenable to credit limit increases. Mine certainly was (Barclaycard in this case), as I called them and pointed out that the credit limit that it currently was, was not sufficient for my current spending pattern; and given they could see that I could clearly pay it off, they were more than happy to double the credit limit - which is more than enough now.
Hey thanks for that!! strangely was thinking about that on my commute tonight. Will defo be doing that0 -
Any updates or tips as to the next top paying cashback card (excluding Amex)?
Leeds and Barclays Onepulse seem to be the best but pay a paltry 0.5% compared to the 3% of the now withdrawn Abbey.
If anyone knows about a new deal coming soon, please do tell.

Shell Mastercard (CITI) pays 1% cashback on purchases everywhere, and 3% for fuel at Shell garages.0
