Dates on eggs / how long do they keep for?

  • Should be no problem; they're not even 2 weeks and they've been in the fridge! If you're worried, scramble, poach or fry them instead; that way you get to check what's inside. I recall using eggs 3 months "out-of-date" and they were fine. Before there were best-before dates, we used our common-sense.:D

Drop them in a cup of water, if they float they've properly had it.

if they float I'd STRONGLY suggest not cracking them, carefully wrap and put in the bin
  • probably fine, just use your nose to tell you if they are ok.

The float test is the best .
If they totally sink and lie side down then they are fresh
If they sink but stand on end it means the air pocket has grown and although they are good to eat you could not poach them
If they float..forget it, they have had it.

I do this with all my eggs as they don't come with a date stamp (never have) and I have not had a bad one yet doing this.

Um, having eaten dodgy eggs before I would say the float test without doubt - otherwise if you eat them strap yourself to the loo!!!

I've used eggs 6 weeks beyond their use by date that passed the float test and sniff test but I did use them in something that was to be baked. I'd be less likely to take such a risk with anything raw or left wobbly like an egg custard or cheesecake
