The only thing I worry about dates on is seafood because i know that food poisoning from prawns is horrendous! If it looks ok, and it smells ok, then it's ok. By the same token I have binned food that is within the UBD because it's obviously gone off.

The Egg test is age old and works. Don't be a date slave!

like many of the others I use eggs past their 'date' ... sometimes waaay past the date, & have never had any ill-effects

I did draw the line though when I was house-sitting for a notoriously absent-minded friend in August, & found some January dated eggs in their fridge, now those went straight into the bin ;)

For a fishatarian daughter at Christmas, we bought a piece of salmon in a bag. Well within date (thawed but frozen up till then). She and I (I'd sneaked a tiny bit) both had fp. She realised it was off straightaway, fortunately, as she was pretty sick for days.

    Eggs - are easy.

I have recently eaten eggs 2 months out of date and they were fine. Tested them first just to be sure.

Hi, just a quickie! I have some eggs dated 22 sept but they still sink in water do you think they would be ok to use in an omlette?

So long as they aren`t floating they should be ok in things like omelettes, scrambles and baking. :)

I agree with Red Doe - if they are not floating and when you crack them they smell fine I would use them.

    Hi frugalsar,

If you've done the Fresh Egg Test then it should be fine.

There are more opinions on this thread:

Dates on eggs / how long do they keep for?

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.
