Xbox or PS3?

Options
I know it's not exactly moneysaving but what is the general concensus but if you had a choice what would you choose.

I have a PS2 and enjoy the likes of singstar, etc but quite a few people say about Xbox.

Your thoughts please?

Xbox 360 with the upcoming price drops is going to be just over half the price of a PS3. The only advantage a PS3 has is the Blu-Ray drive but if you're not bothered about playing Blu-Ray movies, there's no point.

Games tend to be cheaper on the 360 as well. The online experience on Xbox Live! is far better than Playstation Network.

As most games are released on both, the points I've listed above are the main points to choose on now that it's impossible to buy a new PS3 that'll play PS2 games anymore.

the price drop has already happened. you can get an xbox 360 with 60gb hard drive for £170. assuming they still do the same thing as a year ago i would go to your local hmv and see what offers they have. they usually have pretty good bundles and often let you change the games included in the bundle if you want to. that will go for both xbox 360 and ps3. i would shop around though just to see what all the other shops offer bundle wise.
basically like said previously unless you want to play blu ray movies go for xbox 360.

I prefer the PS3 personally. Its dear when comared to the xbox BUT as it has a bluray player as standard, its actually very cheap.
It can connect to the internet, upscale avi files and dvds, play mp3s and you can view your photos on it. you can download free content and it costs nothing to use their online services.
If your interested in the PLAY feature (For extra money) you can use the internal hard drive to record programs etc off freeview.

HOWEVER, if all you want to do is play games then you may as well go for the xbox as theres not much between them (For now ~ in time I would guess the PS3 will overtake in terms of quality as developers get used to its weird achitecture)

If you have BT broadband you can use the xbox 360 to watch tv content, im not sure to what extent it is as i dont have BT BB,

  • The PS3 will be around a lot longer than the 360 because it is far more powerful, this just hasnt been exploited to it's full potential yet. I would think that the PS3 will be competing with the next Microsoft console on an equal par

Instead of asking which console is better (They both have good and bad points) you need to be asking about the games.

Check through the game catalogues on a couple of sites. There are a fair few series that are either PS3 or 360 exclusives, which could well impact on your decision.
Technically, the PS3 is better value for money as a system, compared with taking the 360, adding the HD DVD drive, wireless adaptor and so on, though if you won't need wireless or don't have a HD TV, these won't be as important, so it may not impact.

And technically, the PS3 has more powerful hardware. Its just that its very different to everything else, so game developers are still learning their way around it. But as RIK says, given time it should pull ahead in the graphics department. At least for PS3 exclusives, multi-platform titles will likely play the same on the 2 consoles.

Finally, the backwards compatability. I've not looked at PS3s for a while (And don't own one) but the 40Gb ones can't play PS2 games, which will mean you need yous PS2 still plugged in to play your old games (Though this will also be the case if you get a 360). A PS3 with backwards compatability means you can box away the PS2 and save some space.

However, a 360 will also give you access to all the Xbox games, if there are any you wanted to play.

As a generalisation, the Xboxes were best known for sports and FPS games, while Playstations had driving and RPG games. Though recently, they've both got a good mix now. Especially now that Final Fantasy has gone multi-platform.

    tl;dr

    Its up to you! :D

i've noticed in the ads for the xbox 360 lately they now say it has hd upscaling for dvds. is this a new feature due to the demise of hd dvd or have they always had it? its just i have never bothered to watch dvds on mine and am now wondering if i have been missing out.

the xbox 360 has a 3.2 GHz PPC Tri-Core Xenon CPU whereas the PS3 has a 3.2 GHz Cell Broadband Engine with 1 PPE & 7 SPEs

isn't the CPU 1 in the 360 more powerful
  • The second hand market for the 360 is massive so you can pick up the big games, albeit a little late, for £10-£15 a pop.
