I used to have one of these and I had to get rid of it in the end, molten cheese used to collect in a recess near the hinge at the back and I just couldn't get it clean. The plates were easy to clean, it was the other bits that weren't! Hopefully it's been redesigned since then.0 -
As I've been reading this thread I've gradually become hungrier. So I've now got my old style sandwich maker on my hob making a cheese and jam toastie. By old style I mean the cast iron double cup type with a hinge and long handles. It seals them, it's really easy to clean (wipe with a dry cloth) and it looks quite cool when hung on the wall not taking up space.
I'd certainly recommend one to anyone who wants to try something a little different in the toastie world. I think you can buy more modern non stick types these days but my seasoned cast iron one works just great!0 -
As much as I can see how these would be great if all you have access to is a toaster (work canteens etc) but doesn't anybody make toasties on a good old fashioned grill anymore?? No bags or toastie machine required!
Here's what I do:
Two slices of bread, toast lightly on one side. Take out, sprinkle with cheese. Put back in the grill. When the cheese is mostly melted, take them out again and put a slice of ham on one side of toasted cheese and put the other slice cheese-side down on the ham.
Put the toastie back in the grill, toasting either side. Meanwhile, ham heats up and the cheese melts fully.
Lovely!
I know its a bit more fiddly, but no bags required (more environmental waste) or messy toastie machine.Leftie and proud :beer:0 -
I've used toastie bags for years, I'm now on a Lakeland set, and take them on holidays abroad.
More and more self catering studios and apartments now have toasters in, but few have grills or ovens, so these are great for making a quick snack:T0 -

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, does it go on your hob and not plug in to the electricity? I've never seen something like this for sale, please could you post a photo or tell me where to get one as I'm intrigued!!0 -
I couldn't find any of these in Poundland or the other local low price shops, is there anywhere else you can get them?
Do they fit in a normal size toaster?0 -

I was thinking of getting one of these which I presume are the same thing. Now I will stick with the toastie bags as it saves on another kitchen appliance. These toastie bags are addictive though, I am having toasties for breakfast and for dinner. :rotfl:0 -

I've been using them for a while (the more expensive ones - they are very durable) and find them great. My technique for melting the cheese without burning the toast is to cook once on a slightly higher setting than I would use for toast, then leave it sitting in the toaster for a couple of minutes after it pops up. The residual heat finishes the job off.
I can't eat much cheese and use the Weightwatchers grated stuff - just a little to hold the other filling onto the bread. Lovely with sliced mushrooms, ham and tomatoes plus some fresh basil...0
