  • Strange story but strange coincidences do happen. When I was working as a solicitor I transferred money to the bank account of the vendor's solicitor some 20 miles away. Transaction duly completed. A few days later a friend rang me for advice they had noticed a large credit had been made to their account could they keep it? Yes it was the money I had transferred. The bank hadn't noticed, the Vendor's solicitors hadn't noticed (even though they would now be overdrawn on their Client's account which is definitely a disciplinary offence) and who would have believed me that I hadn't transferred it to my friend? I did check the telegraphic transfer slip very carefully to make sure I hadn't made any mistakes. Still I was very glad when my friend agreed to get in touch with the bank and pay it back.

You should have made an arrangement to split it with him/her and do a bunk.
I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.

Thanks Ian my friend did suggest it but I was one of a dying breed an 'honest solicitor' that's why I decided to retire fed up of clients and other colleagues expecting me to use dodgy methods
  • So if you've retired, they couldn't take your licence off you.

In the future you'll look back at that episode in your life and think 'What if'......?:money:

By the way. I heard recently that the latest scam is for somebody to phone up Solicitors acting for buyers, saying that they are now acting for the sellers and giving new account details for the funds to be transferred to.

I'd have thought that there were stricter rules in place than to let that sort of thing happen.

Perhaps I wouldn't be on this board looking for BT offers:rotfl: But at least I can sleep at night:D

Anybody that falls for that should be struck off or tested to see if there is anything between the ears:rolleyes:

Or get a piece of the action. A 50/50 split on 10 house transactions would last me a few months in some South American hide out.:cool: :kisses: :grouphug:

Does anybody know where I can get a cheap canoe?

Have you thought, that the OP, after reading the 3rd or 4th taking-the-p post, may have been put off visiting the site again, and that is why they've not been back? Certainly, if I had a strange situation occur such as this, and received such stick, it would have put me off posting here again.

It just bugs me that people post here for help, and end up with accusations amidst the friendly advice. I'd posted on this thread after reading numerous others, with similar mixed reactions from people. So my comments aren't directed at the people here in particular, but all who post unkind things on this website. Regards your post; if a stranger asked me in the street for advice with a situation, I wouldn't say to them "well actually I think you're a bit dodgy and your story is bunkum, but just in case it isn't, here's what you should do". I'd just help. But you and me are different people.

I'm of the opinion that people should be able to ask for help for any problem without fear of judgement. If you disagree, fairynuff.
Yes, I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment.

It’s an unfortunate part of the internet forum world that anybody can drop in and condemn people asking advice. I suppose you have to be prepared for that nowadays.

I’m on the fence with this one as it’s hard to decide the truth of the matter.

One thing that gets me, is the one time poster that asks advice and never ever comes back, even when they haven’t been savaged by the illiterati.

Our wonderful ‘modern’ world I suppose.

And yes, I am over 50…

I find it strange that the cashier was the one who came to deliver the letter...seems dodgy to me

I got my car tax a couple of years ago and placed it in the car without paying it too much attention. That evening the woman that served me in the post office came round personally to say she had given me the wrong tax disk (had given me 7 months instead of 6), with the correct one in her hand.
