And surely if £4000 is requested and the cashier is counting out the money why didn't she stop at £4000?

    Something really not right there

Mmm… Pls be nice to all MoneySavers. There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.

Well i have read this thread and it sounds to me like this man has a grudge to do with the bank, were you fired harry for the same thing?
    It’s hardly negative publicity.

I wish I lived nearer to this branch that gives out extra £1000s.

I tend to agree with your sentiment, but the OP does seem to have gone into hiding now.

The other key issue is, as per my earlier post, he is legally entitled to see the CCTV data. It is not just a question of “I’d like to see it.” If he is genuine, I hope he has managed to sift out the worthwhile points.

That may be so but it doesn't prove that every cashier at every bank or building society always offers a receipt.

As Ian Griffiths Halifax says, why would you get a receipt when you're the one receiving something?

    (Meant to quote not thank.)

that is very true, was was just pointing out that some banks still do give receipts, they are automatically printed out at my bank !!
  • Ooo, you're a sceptical bunch!

Although this exact scenario has never happened to me, all the various elements have on a number of car purchases:

    - Withdrawing huge sums of money, I want to draw as little attention to myself as possible. Bored people queued up behind me in a tiny bank branch in a bad neighbourhood - it's a case of "gimme the envelope and I'll stuff it in my moneybelt before anyone sees". I would never count it myself in a branch.

    - Meeting a car dealer in the high street - on one particular occasion, I had to travel up to North Yorkshire to pick up a car that I'd already had checked out remotely. I went up via public transport, and the dealer turned up with the car at the train station (with his wife to drive him home). We did the exchange there and then, and again he didn't count the money out fully in such a public place.

    - I've never spoken to a small-time or private seller that was happy to accept a banker's draft.

    - However, I have always had receipts from car purchases (whether they're worth the paper they're handwritten on is another question).

    - Bank using dodgy tactcs - OK, so I've never had a bank chase me for anything, but I was recently accused of stealing petrol from a service station! I found out via the Police with claims of "CCTV evidence, we know you did it, now pay up!". I phoned the service station and told the man who answered, "According to my credit card statement, I paid you £50.45 on that day". The case was immediately dropped - so much for CCTV.

  • I fully understand your points with regard to the difficult circumstances.

Unfortunately recipients of wads of uncounted cash are taking unnecessary risks, as is proved by this sorry story.

You can request large sums to be handed over privately. At times I also use another bank branch a few miles further away, where it is quieter and less busy/less stressed.

What a shame that yet another person comes on here for help, and a lot of what they get is accusations of lying or trying to pull a fast one. Strange things like this do happen. Just because they haven't happened in your world, doesn't mean it isn't possible. One this that is certain, is that everyone has done something stupid in their life, especially when stressed.

If they've only answered twice on 7 pages, maybe because they've had to read through pages and pages of tripe. (Only 3 posts, in 7 pages of conversation, and "Everybody here thinks it's dodgy"?) Maybe they're trying to deal with the issue instead of spending their time trying to defend themselves against accusations from strangers?

It's what puts me off asking for help on these boards; trying to find the gem of a helpful answer in the middle of all the "you should've done this" "I wouldn't have done that", "why were you so stupid" and "it's a scam".

This is unnecessarily harsh. People did give plenty of advice, it wasn't difficult to find it, and I myself said I thought the post was 'dodgy' but posted a helpful reply, 'in case it wasn't', governed by my own experience with a bank, on the Law of Estoppel.

Perhaps you shouldn't be turning on the people who have posted comments here, at least they have replied to the OP - who doesn't seem to have bothered to return, let alone politely thanked anyone for their time and trouble in posting helpful advice.

Have you thought, that the OP, after reading the 3rd or 4th taking-the-p post, may have been put off visiting the site again, and that is why they've not been back? Certainly, if I had a strange situation occur such as this, and received such stick, it would have put me off posting here again.

It just bugs me that people post here for help, and end up with accusations amidst the friendly advice. I'd posted on this thread after reading numerous others, with similar mixed reactions from people. So my comments aren't directed at the people here in particular, but all who post unkind things on this website. Regards your post; if a stranger asked me in the street for advice with a situation, I wouldn't say to them "well actually I think you're a bit dodgy and your story is bunkum, but just in case it isn't, here's what you should do". I'd just help. But you and me are different people.

I'm of the opinion that people should be able to ask for help for any problem without fear of judgement. If you disagree, fairynuff.
