I don't know why OP didn't just contact the last reg keeper of the car to see who they sold it to, the bloke the OP bought the car from can't have been much of a trader if he hasn't got an address.

I know I wouldn't just hand over that amount of money if I wasn't 100% sure of the person selling

Not at all, a "personal" plate on it and no one knows, why waste good money after bad? I didn't buy it new anyhow, I let someone else take the first hit.
