The ultimate incentive to get debt free, can I do it by New Years?

Thanks Tete
Yep, I've been working as an editor on children's books for the last couple of years - it's pretty competitive and I was lucky to find a local company and get loads of experience. I've got a degree in Literature and I always knew I wanted to do something book-related, so it's great!
The problem is nearly all publishing jobs are in London (over an hour's commute each way - but something I'd be happy to do for my career) so I'm looking everywhere locally for temp jobs, office-based jobs, retail jobs... but there's just not much out there! I know it's not ideal to take a backwards step, but I'm willing to do it if I have to. Do I remember correctly that you're in Events management? What's that like?LBM Sep 2008 debt: £27,927.04start weight: 140.2, week 2: 1380 -
Sort-of Poddle, that's the best way of describing it really. I work for a university on a govt-funded project which provides leadership courses for teachers so I organise that for the North East, from marketing and recruitment through to booking all the venues and stuff. Mostly you get people complaining that they didn't get a biscuit with the 10.30 teas. I enjoy working at the uni though, and the job itself is quite varied and responsible so it's good experience, but it's quite cyclical and I'm bored of it after 2 years.
I want to get into the international side of things at a uni as I did my degree in languages and have lived abroad, so I'm just keeping an eye out on the ads at jobs.ac.uk (universities job site). It's the first time in my life where I've been in the position of not desperately looking for a job because I hate my current one so much so I'm lucky really, especially at the moment.
I know it might feel like a step backwards to start temping, but I'd always say it's better to do anything than nothing, it looks better on your CV I think, and will stop you from going insane/getting fat on home-baked cookies! Sounds like you've a lot of good experence though so I'm sure you won't be looking long!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -
Shame about the interview Poodle, I'm sure you'll find something else though, you're bound to! Your career sounds interesting, much more than mine!
Counting down the minutes until dinner. Looking around I'm worked up.. yep.. everything is in the out tray and I have another 2.5 days to fill.0 -
Lol, it's a slippery slope to insanity and obesity, I will try to avoid it! Your job sounds like it has a lot of potential Tete, and if you can do some travelling at the same time that would be even better. I spent a year in Spain and I've had the itchiest feet ever since
I'm 27 and I've done my fair share of boring jobs, Cinny! Is it your full-time week this week? Any ideas what you really want to do in the future?LBM Sep 2008 debt: £27,927.04start weight: 140.2, week 2: 1380 -
It is, full timer until next tuesday!
I don't really know what I want to do in the future, would be a dream to run my own little cafe in my late twenties/early thirties. I do love my job, as much as I moan about it, right now it's perfect for me. Flexible, good pay, good company, but I don't want to be an office worker all my life. Plus come summer, I'll have lots of lazy summer afternoons off!0 -
OH got the job! He's moving over for good this weekend!
Okay, good news over. Mum has decided the house is too small, which means OH moving into a lodger room. However I won't be able to go see him there, which would mean he'd still be around at ours all the time, not solving the too small problem, or I could only see him on dates, which would quickly get very expensive. So, I'm having to consider moving in with him just the two of us, which part of me wants, and part of me really doesn't want, as I still feel that its detracting from the reason to get married, and makes it less special, and also it'll slow down the debt busting hugely. Need hugs.
I didn't imagine having such mixed feelings knowing OH was moving over, this is what I've been waiting for. Stupid housing.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Oh hurrah!!!!! Congrats to him, how exciting and very sudden all of a sudden isn't it?!
I have to say I don't really understand your reservations about living in sin, I mean living together before you're married, surely it's the best way to see if you're truly compatible. Though I've never lived with a boy myself, not a romantic boy, only student boys. Could he lodge until you're debt free, so you still have some kind of incentive, and then think about moving in together after?
Haha, so he's gonna be spending his days in Billo is he, does he know what he's in for?!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -
He would lodge if I asked him, I just don't think I would get to see him.
My reservations come down to 'who would buy the cow if they get the milk for free', and wanting to get married someday but needing a reason to. Oh and it costs a lot to live places!
I just was looking forward to being debt free, and this will slow it all down. I had this stupid version in my head of how I wanted things to be, and now it's all cloudy and mucky and nasty.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Wow, that's super good news! Well done him!
Why wouldn't you be able to go and see him if he lodges? Do you mean he'd take a spare room in a family home? What about a shared house with 3 or 4 independent tenants? A couple of my friends rent one room and share living space with people of similar ages. It can be a nightmare, but it can work really well and even be a good way to meet new people. Hope you can work it out xxLBM Sep 2008 debt: £27,927.04start weight: 140.2, week 2: 1380 -
Get engaged before you move in together? I don't know. I know what you mean with the milk thing. I don't know! Move in for practicality but no naughties til you're married? Haha!
It does cost a lot but just look at the amount you're throwing at your debt - once that's gone you won't know what to do with all your money anyway! Oh I'm really happy for you! I think you just feel apprehensive because you're in shock as it's happened so quick...Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0
