It's a linguistic thing: it's easier to make the t, d, n sounds than the p, b, m sounds. So they ALL go DaDa before they go MaMa.

and hopefully they'll learn to say MaMa before you all go GaGa! :rotfl:

Trust Tom to be different then. He says Hiya, Ha-ah (when we say DD's name to him which is very similar), bir and br.. (My colleagues jokes that he is trying to say our surname which starts with Br) on a regular basis but isn't even attempting dada or (despite DS's best attempts) DS's name which starts with D.

Talking of speech, does anyone have any experience of tongue ties? Tom has one and all the medical staff in our local area say nothing will be done about it, but I'm worried it will affect his speech. I work in Reception / KS1 and so many children seem to come in with speech problems and I don't want him to be one of them.

Depending how bad it is, he might grow out of it. (netdoctor!)

When did they last say nothing would be done? If that's some time ago, go back and ask again, especially if it's causing any problems.

  • They last said at his "8 month check" (at which he was 9 months and they checked nothing and just spent half an hour patronising a group of us and on at least one ocasion giving what I considered to be incorrect info - telling one mum her baby could go in a forward facing car seat because she was 9 months even though her weight was still a few pounds under the weight restriction) that it would continue to be monitored - although I also take issue with the word monitored as no health professional has even mentioned it since the day he was born, except when I've asked and they've just given the same reply.

Lol, sorry I sound very cross and pernickerty (sp?) today, don't I?

In that case I would go to the GP and ask him to LOOK at it before saying it didn't matter at his age. If the GP has LOOKED at it and said "that's not so bad" or "I think he's still got some growing in the jaw to do, it should improve" then I'd feel happier. Then ask "By what age would you expect that to have improved?"

Certainly if you feel it's impeding his speech then you're quite right to keep having it monitored.

  • AAARRRGGHHHH I AM SO **HULK SMASH** ANGRY AAARRGGHHHH!!!!

Eldest son is from my first marriage. His Dad is a generally reliable, very good parent who I have zero fault with in terms of his parenting ability. UNFORTUNATELY as a human being he's pretty useless. He's been seeing his new girlfriend for around a year and she's lovely, but very sociable-party-girl so his focus has changed from must-have-son-Friday-to-Monday-every-week to will-take-son-when-it-suits-my-schedule. He's still very involved with son, but it's getting to the stage where I'll drop son off in the morning and the ex will be reeking of booze from the night before.

Anyway, I digress. I texted the ex today at 12.28pm and said, "I'll drop him off in a few hours, just going into town. Unless you want to pick him up?" He replied and said to let him know when I was on my way which I didn't reply to because my battery conked out. I had *just* enough battery in hubby's phone to call the ex's house phone and he wasn't in. I don't know his mobile off by heart so I couldn't call that, but SURELY since he knew I was coming over he wouldn't go out would he? I got to his, nobody in so I came home pretty annoyed and texted him to say I was pretty angry that he wasn't in, and annoyed that he relies on the mobile to arrange things instead of just sticking to arrangements.

He's just come up to mine to collect son, and started off his conversation by giving me a bollocking for deigning to be annoyed that he wasn't in. ARRRGGHHHHH!! Is it me?! I don't live with my mobile attached to my hand sunshine!!

My Lo is also different - he started saying mama way before dada (although he got there in the end) the wierdest thing is he keeps coming out with words at random - today was ball, and the other day my mum and I could have sworn he said "don't like that"!!. Then doesn't say them again...like he's storing up a vocabulary. Mostly though he is like his mummy and very quiet. :A

Lol..Tom found his at about 6 months and happily tugs on it in the bath each night  . He also laughs happlily when I take his nappy off and his hand goes straight for it. They were laughing at him at the clinic on Thursday for exactly that. He's never tried to bite it though  I think he wouldn't be happy if he managed that, cazscoob! that reminds me of DS at about that age; he was sitting pulling his own hair and crying because it hurt but still pulling and pulling away!

    Hi Kimberley and welcome!
