Congrats MFD.
I did half and half weaning. Charlotte was most awake around 5pm, so I started giving her a couple of spoonfuls of fruit puree when she had a feed then.
Once she was happy with that, she was having some puree meals, but also having bits of my plate when I was eating. Here I go again on my own....0 -

Thanks Bruno...That's pretty much what I did with ds1 then(well I suppose I combined the two)...started off with baby rice etc and as and when ready gave bits of toast, sandwiches cut into nice hand sized fingers for him....Our kids have pretty much always eaten the same food as us.
Although ds2 had his food blended and made mushy or at least chopped into tiny pieces until he was about 3/4 as he choked on everything - even things like: mashed potato, banana, Weetabix...he was a nightmare to feed I used be on edge every meal time!!

Well our (not so) little 4 month old is definitely enjoying hte baby rice. She was grabbing the spoon and trying to feed herself today, which is a good sign. We're going to give it a few more days, then start trying different fruits/veg gradually. (Just small amounts still - still want milk to be the main thing at this stage.) I liked the idea of baby lead weaning, but she was so hungry that my milk wasn't enough, and she wouldn't drink hungry baby milk from a cup. (she seems happy to drink water though... we're now just drinking from a cup like a big girl seeing as the nozzle wasn't welcomed at all!) I suppose it must taste different from mummy milk.
I'm definitely in the "do what works for you" camp, rather than always following (or not) what the book/HV/says. Not that I would ever completely ignore outside advice, just take it as advice rather than gospel if you see what I mean.Isabella Molly born 14th January 2009

Hiya,
I've not posted on this thread before so hi! :hello:
I have a 4 month old son who is a VERY hungry boy! He has been breast fed since birth but is really struggling on breast milk alone these days. I am now feeding him every 2 hours during the day and he is moaning in between sometimes moaning for food after an hour
I was planning to speak to my health visitor or doctor this week about weaning him as he is more than interested in food and can almost sit unaided. Do people think I should do this first or just take the plunge? He is 18 weeks tommorrow and weighed 15lbs 5.5 oz 10 days ago (was 7lb 15.5 oz at birth) so nearly has doubled his birth weight! :j♥ Mummy to a gorgeous little boy born 11/01/09 ♥0 -
For anyone considering Baby Led Weaning, I'd totally recommend it. We did it with Alice and it was so easy - weaning wasn't really an event it just gradually happened with very little effort. Although we actually didn't start until seven months, the original BLW weaning research started at 4 months. (I'm not sure whether this was before or after the change in advice - I'd have to look it up.) Pretty much all the babies in the research started actually consuming stuff at about six months. As the research was done on breastfed babies, it can't be officially recommended as suitable for bottle fed babies but that is just a research technicality. There is a yahoo group for BLW weaning which I joined and found useful to get background information before we started.Any question, comment or opinion is not intended to be criticism of anyone else.2 Samuel 12:23 Romans 8:28 Psalm 30:5

Giving him cool boiled water in the mean time, rubbing his belly and doing 'bicycle legs'. Just wondered if there are options to treat constipation in babies, because we can't remove the reason he is constipated. He is a month old.
Hia, do you know why he's constipated? In theory babies who have breast milk shouldn't be. However, mine was as a side effect of medication. I found all of the things u listed above to help the best. Not sure if its a bit early for diluted prune juice and EBM. I waited until he was 3 months old and even then found it to be quite acidic for him. I mixed some in milk.
When did he last go? Maybe, it might be best to carry on with massage and cooled bolied water and ask HV on Monday.

I started medication almost three weeks ago. Main side effect is constipation, the NHS Direct Nurse thinks it is probably that.
He is going little and often still, but it is a very small amount and it is really sticky. Not like the huge, runny ones he had before the medication kicked in.
That said, I just heard the most enormous noise coming from him, so I'm off to check - perhaps the extra milk he has been having has helped!Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0
