Sami - I was told that our local consultant tended not to do inductions until 40+14 because most babies arrive naturally by this point anyway. He had one of the lowest induction rates around. I think the standard is 40+10.

This time I'll have until 40+9 and then they'll want me to have another section. I'll see how I get on because last time I was adament I wanted to wait (both me and my brother went 2 wks over and apparently it's genetic) but Imogen would have arrived on her due date if she hadn't decided to turn the wrong way and get herself back-to-back.

  • Good morning.

Last night was day 6 of our bedtime routine and so far we have had 3 nights of absolute success, dream baby, and 3 nights of upset...last night being the worst with Benjamin finally going to sleep at 11pm after starting his routine at 7pm (and worst of all, falling asleep with his mummy in tears :o).

I realise that we have had a 50% success rate and we were having lots of draining evenings before we started but for some reason last night really got to me, and to hubby as he watched me struggling and sobbing as Benjamin screamed every time I took him off the breast. He wouldn't take a bottle so I don't think he was hungry, just suckling for comfort.

Anyway - the point of my ramble is to ask what you do if you think baby is too tired at the point of starting to get them ready for bed...last night I knew he was at the point of too tired when I started getting his bath ready but I wanted to keep the routine going, would I have been better just feeding and settling him straight away?

I know every baby is different but does anybody have any tips?

i'm not speaking from experience but we've been doing our routine since 3 weeks, we dont always follow it though, sometimes seth is already asleep or sometimes we are tired :o and bath him in the morning instead. it doesnt seem to affect his sleep.

  • Thanks em.

To be honest I am not really bothered about bathing him every day...I don't really think he needs it and I do worry about his skin. I only started to do so because it is the 'accepted' nighttime routine IYSWIM.

I am also not sure if last nights performance was because he was still feeling the effect of his injections...he was very clingy all day yesterday and then he refused to take his bottle from his dad, just wanted me.

MFD - if you know he's too tired when you start then skip a bit - prob the bath but do whatever else you do to give him cues for sleepy time. Another thing is to watch out for his sleepy signals - he may be tired before your set time for bedtime and if so then just do the whole routine earlier. You'll get to recognise when hes tired. We get Oz ready for bed anytime from 6.30 to 7.30 - we go by him. (though i have to say it took us AGES to work it out think we were a bit clueless really!)

Feeli - you're doing so well to be expressing this long i think its really amazing. You're doing the same thing I did when Oz was born - achievable goals - i said i'd bf for 1 week then 2 , then 4, 2 months etc etc - always giving myself an out if I wanted it.

Baby sleeping in car - I still let Oz alone when he's sleeping in car - nothing to feel guilty about!!

Tests in pregnancy - re 12 week scan this is how I found out I had miscarried before Oz, so I would never miss that. But then I go private so get a scan every 3 or 4 weeks - I'm the complete opposite of Susan and Sami! I needed the reassurance of scans after my miscarriage, and I'll do the same the next time.

Re inductions - i think most countries count pregnancy at term at 41 weeks, so when they induce in the UK at 40 + 10 I think thats quite early and probably why there are SO many inductions.

I'm most grumpy about those bras because about 5 ladies have been asked to do it and I haven't :p I guess 36D is too small for them - I might get a complex if this carries on, I was always happy with my chesticles but recently they are being made to feel small

I'd put myself down as 34DD - thats what i'm comfortably wearing now from Mothercare - but according to their sizing based on my measurements, i'm getting 38B  so thats even smaller chesticles!

I don't bath her every day - and i think its better for her skin.

I did with older two, because thats what you were told to do!, and I probably had more time on my hands! Both of them suffered with flaky skin, cradle cap, milk spots and sore bums. Violet has her bath every 2 or 3 days and hasn't had any of the above. :D

She fed for bl00dy hours last night! An hour each side til I put her down at 9 thinking that'll be it til around 3am - but no, she had another 45 min at 11, 30 min at 3 and 5!! I'm sure after all that they must have been empty - I think she just likes suckling sometimes!

Shopping for Olivia's clothes is an absolute nightmare, she refuses point blank to wear trousers and she already has a shoe fetish. At 6!! It drives me mad, she gets up on a weekend and puts on one of her best dresses for knocking around the house

Do you want to swap Olivias? Mine refuses to wear dresses and gets up at the weekend and puts on one of her two favorite tracksuits, Hannah Montana or HSM. She's had trousers on for school every day since September. I tried to get her some nice tailored school shorts - but no, they're gay apparently!

Are you following a book or anything?
I'd say just go witht he flow, babies dont really need a bath every ngiht, and if he is already tired then missing a bath wont really make any difference.
I find that with routines, that you cant always stick to them rigidly, so dont beat yourself up about it, it's all trial and error, so next time if you think he's too tired try not givin him a bath and see how he gets on.

I found that on sunday, It got so near his bedtime that I thought i'd keep him up without letting him nap that he go really overtired and I ended up doing the dreaded letting him fall asleep on me to get him settled.
