On weaning - is it right, the HV told me we don't wean now until 6 months?!?
When I had my older two, a long time ago, it was 4 months and they were both ready for food a few weeks before that!

When did it change to 6 months? And is it strict?

Hv said it changed a few years ago but this is my first baby so havent known anything else. My friend started feeding her baby at 4 months (3rd baby, a month younger than Tasha) so I got brave and started it at 5 months.

I asked my brother about this cos he's a GP, he said it's a bit of a misunderstanding of the latest research, which says that breast milk is only a complete nutrition for a baby up to 6 months, and then needs supplementing, but obviously great to carry on after that, with supplements of other foods.

This is not intended to advise anyone medically, and I am happy to post a link to the research so folk can look into it for themselves... :)

If you don't start weaning til 6 months, there then would be a gap where the baby wasn't getting all he needed until they can accept other foods IYSWIM?

as far as I understand it HV's recommend weaning at approx 6 months. However so long as you start slowly with very simple baby rice/veg purees then it's ok to start a bit sooner. One of my books suggests 17wks so I think I'll try it - but it will take a wee while for her to get used to texture and taste and spoons etc so am thinking it'll be slow and steady practice for a while :D

SusanC - my doc (who is a bit of a pig of a man despite having been quite okay today) said the main reason for having a 6 week check is to discuss contraception. He also said that the government are pushing doctors to promote the longer term types of contraception like the injection, the implant or the coil to prevent as many unplanned pregnancies...
Thanks, that's interesting. Nobody ever mentioned contraception to me - the only thing I got was a leaflet in the discharge pack when I left hospital. I wonder why they are pushing those methods.

When I went to family planning they booked me in to have the IUS put in and said we'll give you some condoms to use until you get it. The appointment was 14days away and they gave me 30 condoms  I didn't have the time let alone the inclination to do it that much in 2 weeks! :rotfl:

Re - C sections - my friend has had csection under care of NHS and was told to wait at least a year before trying to conceive and was also told she should only have 3 sections. I had a section and was under care of private consultant and she said i didnt have to wait at all and could have as many as i liked!!
The no more than three rule probably comes from the days of "once a caesarian always a caesarian" when they thought the risk of uterine rupture meant that VBAC was dangerous. I read somehwere about a study into the effect of repeat CS vs VBACs and it went up to a suprisingly high number of subsequent births. I'll have to see if I can find it...

I applied for child benefit as soon as I had registered my baby, but they haven't yet sent me my official numbers and stuff...

I think I need that number to apply for tax credits though?

If I don't do that within 3 months I cant backdate it, but it seems a bit unfair if it's a holdup with the child benefit people!

Anyone had any similar problems? What did you do?
I'm fairly sure that when Alice was born I just phoned up and gave details of when she'd been born (we were already getting WTC) but if you do need CB details for the form I would just send it in without it and attach a note saying you don't have the details yet and will pass them on as soon as you have them.
I was gutted when I applied for Child Benefit and I had to fold Benjamins birth certificate in half to send it off :o I am a bit anal about things like that!

Having said that, having a baby had rid me of my worries about only hanging the washing out with matching pegs...now I just stick it out as fast as I can!!
Me too to both of those - are you me? I always thought I was a bit weird for wanting to match the pegs.

Yes, I'm not thinking of weaning til he's 4-6months, but I've been thinking in advance, and bought 20 little pots. Was going to make some vegetable purees in bulk and freeze them....
That's what I did - I made loads of stuff in advance at about five months then got to six months and she was still happy with milk so I did a bit of research and ended up doing Baby Led Weaning starting at seven months instead. I did manage to use up all the puree cubes though by putting them with stock and herbs/spices to make soup.

 Hello everybody!

I'm back, well, I've been back pretty much last week, but trying to catch up here (gave up, still haven't found the source of the slummy mummy fever)

All went swimmingly, enjoyed it really, not having to deal with dirty nappies (not allowed to lift) for a few days was lovely! So gallbladder is out, five scars are in!
Private hospital was fab, great food and staff (the visitor's menu included coctails and champagne!). Got a bit worried when the anaesthetist told me he and surgeon, travelling especially from an NHS hospital (:p), weren't being paid for my surgery AND it was a really boring one for them to do .

Feeling an incy bit guilty that I'm not working, yet tax payer's money had been spent to send me private :o. I did appreciate it though, thanks everyone!! :kisses3:

Mental Image of the Week:
My skinny son, seeing grandma, ran towards her. As he did so, his jeans slid down to his ankles, followed by the nappy . She was greeted by a wobbly wee willy and a toothy grin. Nice :rotfl:

Agutka - that made me laugh - the wobbly wee willy and toothy grin!

Spotted this in my email inbox this morning - did everyone get it?, or has Gok been spying on me and is worried about my slummy-ness! (I'm actually Yummy today - straightened hair, make up and spanx pants - all in time for the school run).

I'd love to be Gok'ed - but i'm far to shy to go on tele!

Dear Bounty Member,

This week at Bounty.com, you could get Gok-ed. Gok Wan's C4 TV show, How to Look Good Naked, is looking for Bounty mums who want to make the most of their post-baby bod, and it could be you!

The inimitable Gok is scouring the UK for women willing to face their fears and take a life-changing journey from body loathing to body loving, all without going under the knife. He’d love to hear from Bounty mums who would like to get Gok-ed.
If you’re interested in taking part in the show and are over 21, please email for an application form at howtolookgoodnaked@mavericktv.co.uk, visit www.mavericktv.co.uk or call us on 0121 224 8348

I think it changed around 2002/3 but lots of HVs aren't on board with it so still give the old advice of 4-6 months. The official UK advice is 6 months and no earlier or later. (The American Academy of Paedeatrics says "about" six months but states that all babies are different and they could be ready as early as four or as late as nine months.) The WHO used to say 4-6 months but then changed it to 6 months with the proviso that some babies may need to start earlier but no earlier than 17 weeks (i.e. they changed the wording so it still meant the same but encouraged people to wait longer). They recommended that individual governments word their advice as they think appropriate for their culture. The last infant feeding survey before the advice changed found that 49% of people started weaning before 4 months and 49% between 4 and 6 months so I reckon they have worded it so strongly on the basis that people will be less likely to start before 4 months. In the CAR the WHO advises it is okay to give cow's milk from 9 months (instead of 12 like elsewhere). The reason for this is that there are very high rates of formula feeding in those countries and people are very likely to water down the formula due to the cost and it is better for a baby to have correct formula for 9 months and then cow's milk than to have watered down formula for 12 months. The advice is based on harm reduction rather than what is actually the best practice.

Sorry that ended up rather an essay in reply to a very short question - I get a bit carried away on breastfeeding and weaning.
