Thanks Sami_Bee. Might have day out in Shields now :D

It's good you knew what to do with Chris choking on a chocolate button. My local Sure Start did a baby life saving course and part of that covered choking, complete with practice runs on specially designed dolls so you could fit a rubber bung into it's throat. We got loads of advice on other first aid procedures and dangers in the home. If there is something similar on it your area, it is well worth doing.
Here I go again on my own....

Sami - how scary! Can't believe what it takes to get a point across sometimes.

My MIL is generally great, but does feed Imogen some stuff I'd consider borderline. And I was shocked when we were staying with her that as soon as Imogen got up in a morning she got a cup of milk - and a biscuit! It was only just 7am for goodness' sake. As I say, she is generally pretty good though, so I just let it slide. You have to pick your battles & all that.

I did make OH speak to her when Imogen was ill last summer though. I was away for the week and she'd been off it for a day or so. Apparently she wasn't drinking much so MIL decided that sugar-free flavoured water would tempt her more. I only found out because OH complained she was practically swinging from the light-fittings at bedtime. He confessed he nearly didn't tell me why.

I too am not a fan of sugar-free stuff for little ones. What's wrong with diluting a bit of real juice (which was what I recommended after this incident)? Sugar -free just means they're having sweetners instead. I'd rather she had the natural stuff TBH

Rant over. I really do consider myself lucky with MIL. She generally is a joy and has provided us with next-to-free childcare for the last 2 years.

Lol, us too. See you on the little train! Can't beat fish and chips at the seaside. I never eat them anywhere else but always feel like I need chips at the beach!

    just a MIL rant.
MIL: does Oz want a choccie biccy?
ME: no, i'm not allowing him biscuits until he's much older esp not choc ones (she first offered him one when he was 3 months!)
MIL: does he want a rusk?
ME: No thanks they're full of sugar
    MIL: but they're for babies
Me: I know but still he doesnt need one
MIL: Does he want a rich tea?
ME: No really its fine he's not long after his lunch
MIL: You still feeding him yourself (dissapproving)
    ME: Yes
MIL: Would he take some tea in his cup?
ME: Err no ta, i dont hink caffeine is advisable for an 8 month old
    MIL: Some juice? or fizz?
ME: no he only gets water or milk, he doesnt need anything else.
MIL: But he might be thirsty
ME: Maybe but then he can have water or milk
MIL: But it would be a wee change for him
ME: He's only 8 months i dont think he needs a wee change yet, and we dont drink fizz and he's DEF not getting any - bad for his teeth.

    wee while later.......
MIL: Would he take a petit filous
Me: No they arent the best thing for him, i give him natural yoghurt and fruit puree.
MIL: but they're for wee ones!
ME: Even so i'd rather he didnt
MIL: AL (other granchild) got them.
    huffs

    .......
MIL: Whats that bruise on his head?
Me: He bangs his head on the cot the odd time (quite a lot actually!)
MIL: Does he not have cot bumpers?
ME: No they arent really safe for a baby his age?
    MIL? What? why?
    ME: (lists all the reasons)
MIL: (huffy now) AL had one.

    .......

MIL: (when im changing nappy) do you not put cream on his wee bum?
    ME: Only at night
    MIL: But it'll get sore
ME: well it hasnt yet and he's 8 months

ME: Think i'll take him for a walk
    MIL; But its freezing outside
ME: He's well hopped up all cosy in his buggy
MIL: Oh i think its very cold to be going out.

MIL: Is he sleeping through the night yet?
ME: No hes up about 11.30 and then 3am
MIL: You know if you put him to bed at 10pm instead of 6.30 he would sleep to morning
Me: He cant stay awake after 6.30, if i put him to bed later he'd be v grouchy and he'd still wake up at 6.30am even more grouchy.
MIL: I dunno. I never had a routine with mine and they turned out alright.

    OMG.
    nightmare
    but its amusing too.
sorry for the long post had to get that off my chest. lol

Edited to add: this isnt a one off - this is the same conversation EVERY time we see her which is every week or so!

:rotfl: :rotfl: why can I see Mrs Doyle from Father ted in my head now going "will you have some tea" and "go on go on go on go on go on"

Nad my mil does some of the above too but wanting to give a small child tea!! lololololol....

I get the choccy biccy one and now he is older I have given up and let him have one so she is a happy bunny there ;) ..however I got a frosty reception the other day when I said that LO only drinks water or milk (and not much of that as I still bfeed and at 14mths that's slightly contentious also) and that I don't buy ANY squashes as they get drunk in preferences to all healthy drinks by OH and ds1 (and even me sometimes as they are addictive :D )....only to be told in a rather haughty manner that "sometimes it's nice to have a bit of flavour!" like I was depriving her poor son and grandson. lol.:rotfl: Maybe that explains why my Oh HAS to have coke with every takeaway/eat out meal we have no matter how much it costs (and I've explained about the health risks too but he's not giving it up) ...he's defo not a moneysaver that one.

As to the sleeping thing - did she actually bring up kids at all? - why on earth would you want to keep them up till 10pm just to make them sleep through - they would be knackered and it would drive you bonkers :D .

LOL just read the lazy mum confessions and tbh I thought no 1 was normal and no 3 was far more sensible than me - thats what I should do but I'm too much of a worrier and end up collecting little nik naks for AGES until I think I can finally get rid.

Beccles - I did a course called Headstart run by the HVs & Surestart (I was just telling the preg ladies about it earlier:D) one of the things covered was chocking and cpr so I feel like I know what to do, thankfully.
OH has done a 1st aid course that covered LOs and my mum has done pediatric 1st aid coz she's one of the 1st aiders at school, my sis is a Physiotherapist and MIL has basic 1st aid through her job too. - I think Chris is probably in very good hands with us lot! :rotfl: :A

I hate sugar free stuff too! I'm allergic to some sweeteners and lots of them are linked to cancer  so Chris has fresh not from concentrate juice watered down 99% of the time, thats what I drink myself :)

Oh and the lazy mum thing - I've been dusting with socks since way before I had Chris :o;)

I did a course a few months ago and was thinking about it just last night. Thinking how I don't remember any of it . Must dig out the sheets they gave out.

Poor girl, but what's a 3 year old doing in a pushcahir anyway?? Don't pushchairs like that have weight restrictions, she looks like a "chubby" girl.
I have no idea about pushchairs - I've never used one, just thought it was something to be aware of and since Mothercare don't seem to be making an issue of the age/size of the girl I imagine she must be within their recommendations.
