I was also going to ask a Q regarding cups! LO is 14 weeks old and exclusively breast fed. I tried to introduce a bottle at 6 weeks but he couldn't manage to get any milk out - i've tried different teats/bottles etc but no success. I'm ready to give up with a bottle and to try some kind of cup. I give him 10ml of expressed milk in a little cup with gaviscon-he can manage to drink that but it takes forever so wouldn't be practical to give him a full feed.
I'm just interested in which cups were easiest for breastfed babies(that couldn't manage a teat) switch to. I'm desparate for someone else to give just one feed so I can have a longer stretch of sleep!
    Thanks x

Oz wouldnt take a bottle either, but did manage to take a teeny amount of expressed milk or water from a cup from quite early on though it was hard work as the only ones that worked were the free flow ones (not the sucky ones) and he tended to spit a lot of it back out again. He's 8 months old now and i'm still breastfeeding him, and he's funny about milk from a cup (likes the boob a bit too much) but he's great taking water now.

I bought just about every kind of cup going and the ones he likes best now are the sucky ones with a long soft spout but mostly the ones with a straw, which he took from 6 months.

Because your baby is younger than Oz I would try either a free flow cup, or one like Tesco Bottle to Cup Trainer - like below.

Carol - i didn't sterilise bowls and spoons if they are what you can't put in microwave? I just put them in the dishwasher, my HV said its the bottles that are most important as milk is where bacteria will thrive. Although in the very early days of weaning I was using Tommee tippee little containers (about the size of an egg cup and the TT spoons, both of which can go in micro steriliser.

Lwcus - have you tried the MAMUltivent/SILK teats? I got one free with a mag and gave it to my friend who was trying every bottle/teat under the sun to wean her 4mth old off the breast and it worked :T you can buy the teat from boots and they fit avent bottles so if you've got one of those or similar you should be able to just buy 1 teat to have a go with LINK HERE or boots just in case

    just a MIL rant.
MIL: does Oz want a choccie biccy?
ME: no, i'm not allowing him biscuits until he's much older esp not choc ones (she first offered him one when he was 3 months!)
MIL: does he want a rusk?
ME: No thanks they're full of sugar
    MIL: but they're for babies
Me: I know but still he doesnt need one
MIL: Does he want a rich tea?
ME: No really its fine he's not long after his lunch
MIL: You still feeding him yourself (dissapproving)
    ME: Yes
MIL: Would he take some tea in his cup?
ME: Err no ta, i dont hink caffeine is advisable for an 8 month old
    MIL: Some juice? or fizz?
ME: no he only gets water or milk, he doesnt need anything else.
MIL: But he might be thirsty
ME: Maybe but then he can have water or milk
MIL: But it would be a wee change for him
ME: He's only 8 months i dont think he needs a wee change yet, and we dont drink fizz and he's DEF not getting any - bad for his teeth.

    wee while later.......
MIL: Would he take a petit filous
Me: No they arent the best thing for him, i give him natural yoghurt and fruit puree.
MIL: but they're for wee ones!
ME: Even so i'd rather he didnt
MIL: AL (other granchild) got them.
    huffs

    .......
MIL: Whats that bruise on his head?
Me: He bangs his head on the cot the odd time (quite a lot actually!)
MIL: Does he not have cot bumpers?
ME: No they arent really safe for a baby his age?
    MIL? What? why?
    ME: (lists all the reasons)
MIL: (huffy now) AL had one.

    .......

MIL: (when im changing nappy) do you not put cream on his wee bum?
    ME: Only at night
    MIL: But it'll get sore
ME: well it hasnt yet and he's 8 months

ME: Think i'll take him for a walk
    MIL; But its freezing outside
ME: He's well hopped up all cosy in his buggy
MIL: Oh i think its very cold to be going out.

MIL: Is he sleeping through the night yet?
ME: No hes up about 11.30 and then 3am
MIL: You know if you put him to bed at 10pm instead of 6.30 he would sleep to morning
Me: He cant stay awake after 6.30, if i put him to bed later he'd be v grouchy and he'd still wake up at 6.30am even more grouchy.
MIL: I dunno. I never had a routine with mine and they turned out alright.

    OMG.
    nightmare
    but its amusing too.
sorry for the long post had to get that off my chest. lol

Edited to add: this isnt a one off - this is the same conversation EVERY time we see her which is every week or so!

  • nadnad i feel for you, i was in a very similar situation with my DD but i do have a friend who repeatedly offers DS chocolate buttons, biscuits etc
i think people cant quite get their heads round the lack of "treats" (for want of a better word) that babies want or need,

my ex MIL got incredibly offended that i told her not to buy an easter egg for DS last year (he was all of 4 months old) and she told DD (who was 7) that its alright for her to give him some little chocolate like malteasers or something....!!!!!! luckily my DD isnt an idiot or that could have been SO dangerous, i got quite angry about this when i found out and ex MIL responded like i had completely over reacted!

for some reason people always assume they know best/better
i advise you to smile and nod, then pick up your baby rugby ball style under your arm and bloody leg it! :)
