We went to Gardiners in Magherafelt at the weekend. First time there and we had a great meal; I thought the menu had a very good selection. I would like to thank the chef because he accomodated me trying a couple of things from dishes that did not come with my order (there were some apple and haggis dumplings that I really wanted to try but they came with the duck and I wanted something else so I asked for one to try ... no problem! ... and very nice it was too).

As an added extra Chris Ewbank was also having a meal in the restaurant that night. A true gentleman, surprisingly softly spoken and a handshake that requires several operations to put your fingers straight again :D In typical fashion for me I managed to wallop him with the loo door though - bloody stupid place to put the hand dryer.

Great meal and was not too hard to pay for.

    Cafe Milano - delicious

Also Speranza 16-19 Shaftesbury Square Belfast is absolutely gorgeous, went there for my 30th.

Don't know if its been mentioned yet but Legends in the Lisburn Road is good too.

  • Just had a lovely lunch in The Plough, Hillsborough. Wait for it, Chicken goujons with Caesar salad: I know, i know, chicken goujons are not gourmet fare. But it was one of the best Caesars i've had, usually they are disappointing; the goujons were delicious, crispy outside and juicy chicken inside. Also on menu, Mrs Patterson's Beefburger was - according to my better half - best burger he's had out of USA.

    Wrap Works, Lisburn Road, Belfast

They do sandwiches and tortilla wraps which are hot or cold.
It's a small place and maybe more somewhere you'd go for lunch though it seems to be open all day. Was there around 1530 on Saturday with a couple of friends. Got a hot tortilla, it filled the plate and me! Cost around £4-£6 for a torilla.

Well worth it. I will be back at lunchtime a few times since I just work down the road.

On advice from forum members tried Ava Bangor about a month ago and it was super. Back since and again good, however I was there yesterday and it was pretty poor. Small portions and not as nice. Hopefully it was a one off and will revert to previous quanity and quality.

There is a good Chinse Buffet in Dollingstown (between Moria & Lurgan) every Sunday 12-3pm, includes Starters, Main Meals and Desserts all for £7.50. Great hangover cure.

For reasonably priced pub grub in Belfast The Pavillion on the Ormeau Road does a great steak with a free pint for about seven quid, top notch on a Sunday afternoon! Although slightly dearer The Empire on Botanic Avenue does a good feed. For a proper dinner and good food at pretty good prices with a relaxed atmosphere I'd recommend both Villa Italia on University Road and Scalini on Botanic Avenue. Best takeaway, value wise has to be Mamma Mia's on the Lisburn Road, BOGOF, but best pizza in town, bar none has to be IMO, Little Italy, near The Crown.
  • I know it's a chain, but Tony Romas opposite Queens University is very good (ribs are the specialty).

I've been 4 times now: the staff are attentive and the food is always good (huge portions). If there are two or three of you eating together, I recommend you share a starter and sweet. It's not over priced either, considering the portion sizes and free refills of fizzy drinks. The decor is really classy too (not what you'd expect for 'pick it up with your hands' kind of food) .

One problem (depending on your point of view) is that you can't book. It's really popular, so if you don't want to wait in the bar area (which doesn't really have seating) you need to get there early, 6 or 7pm! For lunch it's only open from Thursdays onwards.
