    Yes scandarahar,

I have heard of passive smoking.

I smoke, as I said earlier, I am not proud of it.
It's a daft habit that costs a great deal, not only in monetary but also in health terms. The fact remains that I am an addict.

The point I obviously made badly was, that at Pier 36, I sat in the non-smoking section, at my birthday party, really wanting a cigarette, whilst the smoke from the smoking section (two tables away) wafted over us anyway.

Did you want to chain smoke all night and have the kids exposed to it?

No, Jon_C, I didn't want to chainsmoke all night, I wanted to have one cigarette after my meal.

I would have preferred to have that cigarette at the table with my husband, children, and friends........as I often do at the end of a meal at home.

Back to the topic......Pier 36 is a great restaurant, in my opinion, excellent food and service........but if you are someone who smokes, you will not be allowed to, if you are accompanied by children.

    Quite right too, really.

The restaurant has done the decent thing to protect kids from passive smoking. Adults have free choice in whether they want to put themselves in smoky environments (I often choose to and don't mind at all) but when it comes to restaurants, kids go where their parents take them.

I don't see how anyone can defend smoking at the same table as their kids or anyone else's.

As I said, Pink, if you only wanted one or two cigarettes, it really shouldn't be too much of a chore to go into the next room for a couple of minutes each time to light up.

I only asked whether you had planned to smoke a lot because it seemed to be a major factor in your family evening.

Yes, smoking is a major factor in my enjoyment of an evening, just as, for example, food or alcohol are major factors in other people's enjoyment.

Okay, you win.......I can't defend it.

Thanks to both you and scandarahar for your comments.  You have succeeded in making me feel like an extremely bad mother, and I can't argue with you, because you are both quite right in what you have said.

    Hey Pink,

My comments weren't aimed at making you feel bad - just trying to get you to see it from the restaurant's point of view.

When I used to smoke we referred to it as our intercourse at which point a couple of us would disappear off for quick fag (I hope an American does not read this ;D).

The funny thing is that one of my friends, non smoker, used to say that he thought it was very rude of us to leave the table when out in company. This is the same friend who now spends half the night talking to others on a mobile phone when he is out with us (which is also down right rude) - to the point that rest of us abandoned him in one bat while we went to another (boy was he yappy the next day). I guess you just can't win.

OOPS Sorry I seem to have come into the wrong room. I thought this was about good restaurants not rants about smoking. Anyone know where I can find a room on good food recommendations ???

Nobody's been ranting, JM. A smoker raised a point about a restaurant's smoking policy and a couple of people gave their opinions.

Have you nothing to add yourself?
