A couple more suggestions for the Carrick area - The joymount arms (opposite the big clock on the sea front) do lovely meals for a decent price although the non smoking section is up stairs so not good for oldies or people with kids. And the Windrose (at the Marina) is pretty good, especially the steaks, and the staff are very good - one of them spent a few minutes trying to entertain our 11 mth old baby so we could finish our meal in peace.

It was DWs birthday last week so she got to pick which eatery we should grace with our presence and, despite me saying I would never be back, she picked Papa Joes/New Orleans in Bangor. I did not inform her about rumours on the web surrounding the old chef.... so ssssshhhh.

I have to admit that the service was OK (not excellent, but better than any previous occasion) and the food was lovely - I was as stuffed as a really stuffed thing..... although I admit to deliberately avoiding the tossed salad!!!!!

Had a terriffic lunch in Ratz Bradbury Place yesterday. Slow service but food worth waiting for. Very reasonable too. Two soups served with freshly baked crusty roll, a ciabatta toastie and Savoury pancake plus two cokes for £17.

Only opened last month but I believe there is also one in Bangor.
Any of you tried this one?

I have eaten in Ratz many times, even before he was Ratz International in Bangor. Very Good, I consider this is the best Restaurant in the Bangor Area - Not Cheap, but the best. Ralph, the owner ands chef was always on hand, hope he has not moved to Belfast, I will miss my chats about his personal wine cellar, not the Tardis, but a RED Telephone Box.

Missing the Red Panda - I would rather the one one Great Victoria St than Odyssey but food great in both.
    Cafe Milano - delicious
Olio - great menu, nice atmosphere, good wine - reasonably priced
Viscounts Restaurant in Dungannon - excellant reputation
    DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY ;)

I like Ratz but, to be honest, I am starting to get a bit disappointed in the choices in general in the Bangor area. I think nowadays with most restaurants (and other things) we are comparing 'varying degrees of good' and many of the dishes are starting to taste bland. There used to be a restaurant at the bottom of Grays Hill (Its no longer there - possibly Graingers??) and I remember the dressings and sauces they used just had so much taste and flavour.

We occasionally go to the Culloden or Crawfordsburn Inn just to try something different -but it is all starting to look and taste like modernised art on a plate. I would love someone to go back to some of the old favourites like a good beef wellington (used to get that at the hotel just above Pickie (now gone)).

Maybe we are just spoilt these days. My all time favourite eatery though has to be the Brynn Howell (sp?) just outside Llangollen (sp?) in North Wales (close to Bangor ... just the wrong one :D ) - the chef in there really knew how to prepare sauces ... and the presentation was fantastic.

I liked the one in Great Victoria Street but was very disappointed with the one at the Odyssey - although neither are as good as the 'Ruby King' in Bangor. They do a high tea menu for £10-11 Sunday-Thursday which has a really good choice on the menu.

Having been to the Bangor Ratz a few times, the service I have received on each visit has been slow to stop. The last time, I asked for a glass and after 10 minutes and 3 times asking I got up and got it myself. Ok, they were busy but that's crap service.
