Quite correct Hansi - it was in my old article - but I've now dropped it in favour of the Bank of Ireland card

    Quite simple really

0.5% up to £3000 annual spend and 1% over on Bank of Ireland
0.5% up to £6000 annual spend (£500/month) and 1% over on Abbey - hence why i dropped Abbey.

It's not a bad card - just this one beats it.

I read your new article with slight confusion when you mentioned the previous best the Circle Rebate paying 1% had slashed it rebates!

I got one last year when you mentioned them, i rang them today asking what the rate was as i have never had a letter telling me it had reduced the rate. They told me it is still 1% and they have no plans to drop it for excisting customers

So Martin do you know different or is the customer agent wrong?

    Hi

Can someone clarify the Amex 2% cashback, their websites states

"An annual rebate on the aggregate amount of all Transactions (other than Cash Withdrawals) will be payable to you by us at the following rates:
    - 0.5% for aggregate amounts up to £2,000; and
    - 1.0% for aggregate amounts from £2,001 to £5,000; and
    - 2% for aggregate amounts in excess of £5,000

What does aggregate mean, I assume it means that if you spend over £5000 in the year you will get 2%, or do you only get 0.5% on the first £2000 & 1.0 on the next 2001 to 5000.

    thanks

    Karl

the cashback from the AMEX platinum credit card is thrashed out Here but essentially if you spend more than £6K in a year it beats a 1% cashback card hands down
    hope this helps

There is some discussion of an upper limit for cahsback on Amex over at the fool.

The Cap1 reduction has appeared in the press (Telegraph) but is for new and "selected" customers so you may have escaped. The outlook an cashback cards is not so good though.

You won't have escaped the Cap One reduction - as far as i know. The indication to me was ALL customers will be notified at some stage this month.

I will reconfirm this with them and reply here.

Have any of you got a Bank of Ireland money back card? I got one last week and although they do things differently I think the customer service is the best I’ve come across.

OK they did make me collect the card from the Leeds branch (I’m in Leeds anyway) something about as an added security measure credit cards must be collected from a Branch – however they did open the branch after normal opening hours just so I could collect my card – HSBC never did that. Bank of Ireland also has a policy of addressing customers by their first name when they come into a branch – I liked this!

Phoning customer service is also great – they’re very friendly and down to earth and speak in a lovely accent. It’s an 0845 number.

Anyway .. the card’s a nice design and I’m impressed so far.

  • A little surprised not to see the Alliance & Leicester cashback credit card not recommended in your latest update.

Their alternative 0% interest for 9 months credit card is not bad either.

Am i missing something bad with these cards?

Hmmmm.... slightly confused - the A&L card isn't in there because it's cashback isn't particularly good

    From memory it is

    0.5% cashback
    1% in partner stores
    and 10% of interest repaid

Well taking the interest repaid first - i always see this as a pointless benefit. Anyone paying interest shouldn't be using a cashback card, but the cheapest rate card and a&l isn't that.

The 1% in partner stores is something i always discount on all cards

And 0.5% cashback simply doesn't make m'list of top buys?

I'm wondering slightly if you may still have a card hungover from the days when A&L paid 1%?

    Am intrigued

I once had an offer (probably 2 or 3 years back) of 1% cashback on a Beneficial [HFC] Card for spending during a particular period of 2 or 3 months. This was an exisiting card which never usually offered cashback - and hasn't since. I wonder if it is possible to rate these 'occasional' offers - since one can't predict where they may arise?
