Sky+ - is it worth it?

  • I *may* have worked for sky in the past....

As a product Sky+ is definitely an improvement to people's lives, surveys show that people watch less TV with it but actually watch the programs they want to see and get more out of the choice of channels and don't endlessly channel hop.

Not sure whether it is worth the cost for everyone, if you don't watch much TV anyway then maybe its not worth it.

The limits of the technology is that it's very difficult to categorise tv programs and allow a machine to learn what you like other than in a very simplistic way - bloke A likes "sport" and woman B likes "films: Romantic comedy"

One day your TV will be controlled by your PC and will do this pro-actively record things you really will want to see but that's a long way off.

...When we ordered sky+, the fitter came and explained that we only had one sky feed so would only be able to record the channel we were watching at that point. When we asked what we could do to change this he explained we would need another feed, and that this would cost several thousand pounds (we are the only poeple in the building who use sky, so no-one else to split the cost with)... .

I would recommend you speak to a proper satellite installer for advice because if running a second cable really is a problem, you could use a stacker/destacker to resolve this for £100:

thanks for this - although I'm not sure what you mean by a 'proper satellite installer'? We had the man who fitted the sky+ and a satellite engineer tell us independantly of each other that there was a problem and It wasn't able to be fixed without a new cable:confused:

will have a look at your link - thanks

it appears that several people have got sky+ free by cancelling. Dont just threaten, ask them to cancel the account. You then get put through to the cancellation dept who have more power. Tell them you want to cancel because sky on is own is no good to you because you are not at home at the right time to watch the programmes you want. Dont worry that you have tried it once as you will get a different agent next time. If they dont bite, go ahead with the cancellation.....it takes 30 days notice during which time they WILL ring you to ask you to stay. Even if they didnt you can always stop the cancellation at the very last minute. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain

I can vouch for this as we did it last year. They offered us it at £40 at first, so I just said no its ok, if you can do it for free then we may get somewhere, they said no so I said cancel.

An hour later and somebody rang to say they have seen we have cancelled, if they gave us Sky+ for free would we stay. Also managed to get the whole lot for half price for 3 months too.

Sky HD upgrade to existing customers is £150.00 with £60 installation.

    I had a Sky+ HD upgrade 2 weeks ago for £105 in total, £75 box + £30 install.

I did however have to upgrade my package to a premium package which I planned on doing anyway!

    Phone 01506 421825, then take options 1,4,5,3,4!

They are the ONLY department able to offer the deal... they guy told me that the deal is designed for people looking to cancel movies / sport.

Sorry I confused you, I was referring to the extra £10 month we used to have to pay for the sky+ features, not for the channels

When you say you used to pay £10/month for Sky+, do you mean you don't pay this any more? I phoned Sky+ last week to cancel, hoping they would offer a great deal (was paying £50/month for Sky+/Multiroom/all the channels except Movies). The best they could offer was to reduce my Sky+ subscription to £5 instead of £10 (for six months) so I will still be paying £45.
I think I've been had! What phone number should I use to get through to cancellations?
There We Are Then !! ;)

I cant remember exactly when it happened , but the £10 extra charge for sky+ features was dropped sometime in 2007.
There is a £10 month charge for multiroom as well
sky 6 mixes plus sports plus multi room is £50 so you may not have been paying for sky+ after all.

Just as it hasn't been already (amazingly), just thought I'd mention the humax on this thread...does (more or less) everything sky+ does for you, but on freeview...Can record two chanels and watch a recorded show (or some other channels, not all), really easy to record...no fast forwarding to find recordings etc...

If you want the features of sky+, but are happy with the channel selection on freeview, the humax is a pretty MSE solution - £180(ish) and you're done. (no subscription)
  • Love the Sky+. If you like any series having a series link which adjusts to any time changes is great. The only problem you may have is if you are recording a double bill as Sky tends to over record the first one by a few minutes and under record slightly the second. Might mean you miss the first couple of minutes of something.
