Yes, there's no problem in playing back a Sky+ programme and recording this on a DVD recorder. If you can see a picture, you can record it!

this is my situation. We have a Sony DVD recorder with hard drive and freeview. This will let me record a sky channel then I can watch a freeview channel through the TV.

I suppose the only difference if I get Sky+ is the pause and rewind feature
  • basically if u have Sky, I think almost everyone will agree that Sky+ is amazing! I have V+ which is essentially the same thing, but the EPG of the V box is slightly less intuitive than the Sky one. Also with V+ you get the option to watch BBCiplayer stuff directly through the V+ box, rather than having to do it on your PC or connecting it to the TV.

I don't watch that much TV, but what I do watch I get really annoyed if I miss and due to my job this would happen very often. With the series links feature you just relax and then you just catch up watching a series whenever you like...

Someone mentioned HD. Its impressive, not as good as Blu Ray, but then the disks are 50Gb, and if we had that much quality through digital TV signals there would be able two channels according to my clued up housemate. HD is def the way to go, but it is far from mainstream. Through our V+ box we get HD, but then there are not many channels with have it, even BBC HD doesnt show everything, and not at the same time often as the same programme is on the non HD BBC channels. Therefore if I had to pay a subscription of £10 a month for HD, I doubt I would, there is just too little shown in HD in UK at the moment. I think eventually more and more will go over to HD and then it will become much more worth it. I also think that like the Sky+ charge was dropped as somoene said in 2007, the HD charge will be dropped in the coming years. The £10/month charge now is what you pay for being at the sharp end of technology.

So in summary, V+/Sky+ is def worth it if you have them, if you just need freeview getting a PVR will do the same job but without the monthly subscription to Virgin or Sky.

I *may* have worked for sky in the past....

As a product Sky+ is definitely an improvement to people's lives, surveys show that people watch less TV with it but actually watch the programs they want to see and get more out of the choice of channels and don't endlessly channel hop.

Not sure whether it is worth the cost for everyone, if you don't watch much TV anyway then maybe its not worth it.

The limits of the technology is that it's very difficult to categorise tv programs and allow a machine to learn what you like other than in a very simplistic way - bloke A likes "sport" and woman B likes "films: Romantic comedy"

One day your TV will be controlled by your PC and will do this pro-actively record things you really will want to see but that's a long way off.

Am I right in saying that if you just have the freesat from sky - ie no monthly subscription - just getting the channels that are free from sky (with the one off £20 card), in addition to buying a sky+ box, you have to subscribe £10 per month and upgrade the lnb to use sky+. ?? Anyone confirm this?

We are keen to get Sky + but £160 seems steep to me so decided to try the cancellation threat to get a reduced price or even free box and installation.

They offered me reduced subscription of £3 for the next 3 months with slightly reduced channels. Very nice but that's not what I wanted:mad: .

Anyway so I have cancelled (somewhat to the surprise of their agent) and will see if I get a call. I only had their basic package (no movies or sport) so they may not be feeling generous

I'll have to cancel the cancellation if not, as the family will disembowell me if it goes. I'll post the final outcome.
