I was talking about Lidl. Sometimes I've bought it still frozen.
Well used to - I don't get it there any more.0 -
i know what you mean, they dont half go at some speed when putting your shopping through. do you think this is because they are paid alot better than checkout staff at asda, tesco, etc and are expected to work at speed?
Both.
Aldi store assistants earn up to 50% more than Tesco general assistants (and do 200% of the work).
Aldi checkout targets hover around 900 items per hour. The checkout target at the Big Four is about 400.
An average Aldi store has never more than 2-4 staff present. This is where their real cost leadership (overhead) derives from.
The idea behind discounter checkout procedure is actually quite smart. It's the bagging up that comsumes most time on supermarket checkouts, depending on the individual customer, of course. If you've ever queued behind someone who takes all the time in the world, meticulously packing each item into one single bag, not giving a damn for the queue behind him, you'll know what I'm talking about. With the customer chucking his shopping straight back into the trolley and not bagging up until after he has paid and is all done, a cashier at a Discounter can serve 3-4 customers in the same time that a Big Four cashier takes to serve one person. In Aldi, while you're still bagging up at your own pace at the packing bench, the cashier has already served another two or three customers. This reduces everybody's queueing time to a fraction of what you experience elsewhere. Efficient and time saving, or what?
It's not every Briton's piece of cake, of course. As far as I'm concerned, I prefer it the German way. We're an impatient bunch. Nothing worse than getting stuck behind one of these purposely slow baggers. Nee, gehnse mir wech. (Naaaah, go away.)0 -
I think the checkout/bagging system at Aldi is GREAT. Makes it so much faster. I worked at kwiksave for a couple of months and the speed they scan stuff at really impresses me :rotfl:
(also, bonus points to aldi for having store managers working the checkouts sometimes. I've worked in retail for a long time and managers who work as hard as their staff (and do the crappy jobs too) are always respected and liked.)0 -
I love Aldi :j Best shop ever!
You cant get everything there but you get what you have to from Tesco and save money on everything else.
The supermarket value lines tend to be rubbish, iv tried a few Tesco value things and they are utter !!!!!! Atleast with Aldi you get value and price.0 -
I totally forgot about kwik-save. I think this is where my aversement stems frrom. Used to stay with my Uncle, God rest his soul, whenever my Mom travelled and used to always be the one chosen to go with a cousin to do the weekly food shop. The shame of being 12 and buried under a mountain of kwik-save bags that we then had to log 20mins home, walking all the way and going past school friends, was more than I could bear. Gosh this feels like therapy :rotfl: Maybe now that I have identified the root of the problem I can move on now. I can even say My name is Woodyrocks and as much as I love the big 4, I may finally be able to walk into a budget store and walk out with a carrier bag of stuff (okay, maybe that is pushing it, 2 items to start with!)DEBT FREE AND LOVING LIFE0

Thanks Woodrocks that gave me a trip down memory lane. My mother (South Wales) used to shop for every day things at Kwik Save.
As for Aldi, I tend to dash in, buy stocks of dishwasher tabs, some face cream, some 'tear and share' (treat for OH every bit as good as Waitrose) and then dash out again. Agree that the jumble of non-food items in the middle is a mess, doesn't make for a pleasant shopping experience. In the past I have bought pesto, sun-dried tomatoes, dried herbs and some teddy chocolates that DD loved. I must check out my local as it's been extended and refurbished but generally I use Aldi for stocking up on the things that are good/value not a weekley shop.0 -
I had a couple of new Tescos value things last week I must admit Aldi's stuff was better. I shop at Tesco's because they have a wider choice of Veggie stuff.I love Aldi :j Best shop ever!

When I say I only eat good quality cuts, its because I like unprocessed - as far from "a la turkey twizzlers" type meat as possible.
I don't want to eat bits of an animals nose, ar5e, ears, feet, etc.
I just want lean ungrizzled cuts. I buy the happier chickens & the happy chickens eggs.
I like Sainsburys taste the difference beef. I like M&S very lean mince.
I will only eat the top of the range (finest, TTD) sausages.
I do care about animal welfare. I would rather buy less meat & eggs than buy battery chickens or eggs.
I don't wish to eat every little bit of an animal, its not for me. Roasts, steaks, chops, rashers & only the best for sausages & mince. BUT I would rather eat less than buy processed or grizzly or "value" meat.
I hate to say this but the way you eat your meat is EXTREMELY wasteful. Your premium cuts only account for a small proportion of the animal. The energy and the cost towards producing the whole animal is WASTED if you only eat breast meat and premium cuts. You may care about the animal but you don't have a care towards of what your habits are costing the environment.
Anyone who is not vegetarian MUST eat the whole animal. No amount of energy saving/recycling you do will make up for the energy wasted in producing parts of the animal you consider not good enough for you to eat.0 -

Uh oh. Does that mean no more beef for me? I really couldn't eat the whole thing. Gotta stick with chicken then.
On a more serious note, of course you have a very valid point. Besides, the lesser cuts are used, anyway, for mince, ready meal ingredients, cat and dog food, and so on.0 -
