The only shops that I know of with a strange smell about them are those dodgy shops in Peckham that sell monkey meat and dried fish:eek:
Lidl and Aldi don't smell any different to Tesco or Sainsbury's.
I occasionally shop in Aldi but am not afraid to admit that I do most of my shopping in Lidl where I buy: bread, cold meats, lasagne (they do a proper beef one), chicken cordon bleu, mozarella pizza, marscapone ice cream, household things, the odd bit of fruit/veg.
Fresh meat is bought at the local butcher, eggs from the market garden shop along with most of the veg.
I refuse to buy fruit and veg in Tesco or Sainsbury's these days because they go off extremely quickly:mad: I really can't be bothered to waste my money.
I know that people are entitled to their opinion but there is no need to bang on about revolting food when your tastebuds are extremely limited. The comment about bad breath following a seafood pizza made me smile - has the person who commented thought that her OH may not have cleaned his teeth or a week or that he has a medical problem?0 -
the WORST thing about shopping at Aldi is the speed that the checkout operators fling your food through the scanner - they then growl at you and tell you to take your stuff to the side counter to pack your bag - not a nice attitude, not everyone knows the routine ! :mad:0

That would be me.
I actually said that I don't like things like pork lasagne etc wherever it's from.
I'm extremely insulted by your suggestion that I have limited tastebuds.
I will never forget the smell of that seafood pizza.
I don't think OH has a medical problem but maybe he cleaned his teeth with Aldi's own toothpaste. :rotfl:
These Aldi shoppers are getting more and more defensive. It's ok if you want to go there, honestly, don't feel that anyone's criticising. If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in0 -

We pop into Aldis/Lidls on occasion and we quite like them
We tend to get their vegetables etc.

Whaleoilbeefoct you're not wrong about the defensiveness lol. I'm sticking to what I originally said the shops stink and the food is minging and finally I eat good food and that's why I can tell the difference between haute cuisine and crap that tastes like dogs ballsacks.:p0 -

There does seem to be a lot of hostility to the people who don't/won't shop there.
I like M&S & Waitrose for a bit of my shopping, many people on here scoff at that.
You pays your money, you takes your choice.
I don't look down on anyone for shopping at Lidl/Aldi, but I don't expect anyone to look down on me for liking M&S/Waitrose for "some" things.
Would be boring if we all liked the same things & shops.0 -
I am not sure I would want to do my shopping there every week, but it's not too bad once in a while. My local Aldi is well laid out with friendly staff
, fruit/veg always look fresh and the continental selection is good. No way could I buy everything there but I have had some good bargains on their weekly specials. More "upmarket"
than local Lidl's which is still good for some things.

Because I don't want to spoil the enjoyment of eating a pie by chomping on gristle. No, what is it? I'm not a good old fashioned cook, I must admit.
Gristle fair enough but the fat in meat breaks down with long slow cooking to give it that rich, unctuous flavour.
Throw a pig's trotter into your next casserole. Sounds disgusting but it's worth it
Marbling, from Wiki, so not exactly a great explanationbut this guy and this one too probably know a bit more about decent food than any of us.
I couldn't stomach eating it if it was full of the crappy bits, I'm just fussy with meat.
The "crappy" bits contain some of the best flavour. It depends on the provenance of the meat not the actual cut. Obviously it also depends on how you cook it! It sounds obvious but fillet/ sirloin/ rump is going to cook more quickly than a piece of braising steak. What I mean is I choose to eat chops, steaks, chicken breasts, joints of meat, etc. Good quality cuts only. I am very careful about sausages & burgers & I choose NOT to eat reformed chicken breast & processed meat & tinned meat etc.
I do realise the supermarkets mess around with our food a lot, but I feel I practice damage limitation with staying away from obviously processed food.
Why do you only eat "good quality cuts"? Surely it's more important, both in terms of flavour and of conscience, that the animal is properly reared. As above - a cheaper piece from a decent animal will be far above a "better" cut from an intensively reared one. Most supermarkets (and I see you shop at Waitrose & M&S so it's slightly less valid) hang their meat for a maximum of 21 days (Sainsbury's Taste the Difference & Tesco Finest). There's a very good butcher here (Ginger Pig) that hang their rump for 45 days - the difference is more than noticeable.
Obviously processed food is to be avoided like the plague but that doesn't mean Aldi & Lidl process all their food. TBH I'd rather choose from there than Tesco - German welfare standards are higher than here.I'm extremely insulted by your suggestion that I have limited tastebuds. :rolleyes:No, what is it? Wishing no disrespect there is whole other world of food out there that can be tried - whether it comes from Aldi or not
Many of the "classic" dishes use cuts that aren't premium, as they come from a necessity to use up the entire animal. We seem to have forgotten that as we've become more affluent, sadly. These Aldi shoppers are getting more and more defensive. It's ok if you want to go there, honestly, don't feel that anyone's criticising.

Very true :-)It's not a lot of work unless you have to do it.0
