Whilst I agree raska - I cant see why anyone is breeding cross breeds for any other reason then to line their pockets - hence my back street breeder comment to this thread,
After having a less then well bred cocker spaniel Im very very sensitive to bad breeding practices as I think anyone whos parted with good money in all good faith for what turns out to be a very poorly animal would be. Since I lost my lovely lad Ive done my best to explain why its so important to get a pup thats been well bred, where the history can be checked back at least 5 generations and that all recommended health tests are done on the parents before breeding takes place.
Im no expert, just passionate that animals dont suffer needlessly - and back street breeders and puppy farmers breed suffering and misery along with the litters. This litter is already 11 weeks old and homes not found. Looking at that picture thats 6 pups still finding homes - whats the chances they will all find forever homes now they are past the "oh my god how cute" stage? Im betting there will be more then one of those making its way to a rescue - if its lucky
You make some very valid points, so I think we are basically singing from the same hymn sheet (as they say) - there are several Doodle breeders on the Labradoodle websites which have been listed who are actively campaigning for better breeding practises, and these apply to all dog breeding, not just Doodles, pure bred dogs or plain old 'mutts'.
The biggest problem is getting people to realise that that cute puppy will already have formed strong opinions about how things should be done based on it's interactions with humans and other dogs before it's even hit 8 weeks, let alone 11 or 12! For instance, letting all the pups feed from one big food bowl - this can lead to food possesivness or a lack of willingness to eat without others around. Not allowing pups access to the outside to toilet, not allowing them to hear, see and smell normal household sights etc. which can lead to nervousness (particularly in the older puppy/last to leave the litter etc.) Allowing bullying between litter members, so one learns to bully other dogs, and the victim learns to be a victim - developing abnormal reactions which older dogs can't understand...... the list goes on.
Breeders who are breeding for the 'pet home' actually have a far harder job than those who are breeding for the show ring - in the show ring it's either right or wrong - a pet dog has to deal with possibly inexperienced owners, young children, other family pets, maybe older/disabled owners etc... And they are supposed to *know* how they should react - so many owners also seem to think they are born knowing the word 'no'!
Rant overPlease forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Raksha, you so dont want to be living here, would kill ya to see how puppies are bred just willy nilly - "because she NEEDS a litter"
Last year I was sorely tempted with getting a new pup and have always hankered after a Red Setter and there in the paper was three pups still needing a home. Both Parents KC registered, father a show champ and both parents could be seen with the pups.
So off we went to see the pups
Dad was a looker - full pedigree ok, just recently purchased by the owners - mum was an "ok" standard. Mum was the owners original pet - she had never been house trained and was an outside dog, living in a pen. Dads fate was to be the same
The pups - being kept in the garage
9 weeks old and still shy of humans and all noises
One had a very badly damaged tail which should have been docked at time of injury it was that badly deformed
£300 quid a pup (which is high here) but the one with the bad tail - £200 if I took it there and then and sure I could take two pups for £400 :eek:
It took ever ounce of will power I had to walk away
Now they werent horrible nasty people - just a normal family thinking they did right by breeding from their b1tch and not having a flamin clue
The pounds here are FULL and dogs are very lucky indeed if they get the full 7 days. The lass at the pound says they quite often drop the dogs straight in at the vets for euthanasia as they know they wont get homed and the pounds are full.
Thankfully they rescues in England do their best and get as many dogs as they can find room for shipped over there to be rehomed, indeed at one time the wee springer I fostered looked as if he would be going to the IOW via a relay of Springer rescue volunteers.
The lad I have now will be my last ever from pup - I cant even think about ever having a pup again now Ive learned so much about what happenes to unwanted dogs. If Im still young enough to want another dog when his time is past - it will be a rescue0 -
All mine have been rescue. I am currently involved in a rescue who gets the dogs out of a stray pound on their 7th day and finds them rescue places all over the country and then the transporter volunteers take them in relays to the rescue. Those we cant find a rescue place for - notably staffies
we try to find the money to put in emergency boarding until we can find a place for them.
8000 dogs a year are put down after their 7 days. Please dont buy a puppy if you can save a rescue dog.0 -

Absolutely - I could never buy from a breeder and just encourage more breeding whilst this is the case. This is the only reason why I have an issue with breeding cross breeds - there are so many lovely cross breeds already in rescues, just waiting for new homes.
Hethmar - I remember on this thread (when discussing Milly, the little poodle cross in rescue who had some interest from the OP and another couple) - you said that lots of people show interest in rescue dogs but then never come through - sadly it looks like this may have been the case with Milly - the 'reserved' note appears to have gone from by her picture.

Oh my god fc i cant believe that the other couple didnt want her. When we went to see milly they were adamant that they got the first reserve on her and that they wanted her to be a friend for the dog that they already had. They made it very clear that they were getting her, and because i thought they new all of the people at the bandstand that they would get her. Feel awful now poor milly.0 -
Yes, as I said back then - it always surprises me how people act so confidently and then never follow through. Cant understand it - but may be its for the best if they are people who cant give commitment.
Once I saw my dogs (albeit one was disabled and it took some thought whether I could manage) and I said Yes, they are for me - that was it - you follow through, you do your best for them for the rest of their lives. But sadly a lot of people arent like that - hence all the pre-loved (??) dogs that appear in the stray pounds.
I dont understand but may be different people have different levels of "love".

such beautiful dogs on the list to be put to sleep - poor creatures - I wish people would think of these dogs when they decide to breed for profit. I expect poor Rhona and Whitney were 'worth' hundreds as pups - but two years later they are unwanted and booked in to be put to sleep.0 -
The fashions go in circles too - once it was Dalmatians being dumped once they were no longer cute puppies, staffies, rotties, next thing, Im sorry to say may well be the new cross breeds.0

Morning All and a very Happy New Year
I just wanted to update you all on our puppy. :j
Lady (our springerdoodle) is nearly 6 months old now and what a delightfull puppy she is. Having never had a puppy or even a dog before we were pretty unsure of it all especially as I have allergies to some animals, but she has never been any trouble at all. She doesnt shed her fur and I have no allergies at all. She is making us all fitter as I never tire of taking her for walks on the beach or in the woods, even if its at 6am in the morning whilst I drop my oh off at work :rotfl: . I know that some people are very against cross breeding of dogs but in my case we have given a dog a lovely home and she is very cared for and very loved. I dont know if the breeder will breed again as im not sure that she got rid of all her puppies but im glad that we she did breed her and that we had the opportunity to buy her.
Thank you once again to all the people who responded to my thread at the beginning and gave me lots of usefull information. :T0 -

I've only just seen this thread as it's come to the first page due to a new posting & i've read it all! It's so nice to read an update & it sounds like she was the right one for you, I believe in fate (Especially after yesterdays weird happenings-detailed in my Cav thread-) & it sounds like she has a lovely home with you, i'm SO jealous that you have a beach close by, I used to live in South Devon & it'd have been amazing for a Dog there but my circumstances weren't right for one at that time!
I do think that you need to post up recent pics though0
