I had looked on the site but we thought a labradoodle was probably too big for us. Thanks anyway.
  • to be honest there is a risk here - an adult crossbreed (ie. with its adult coat) or a purebreed of a non shedding breed (yorkie, poodle etc etc) would probably be the safest bets (as with each you know the final coat type and size of the dog as well as its temprement).

But, as you have made the decision to go for one of these pups I do hope for you and the dog that all goes well. Do be aware that srpingers need a lot of exercise and stimulation, especially young ones!

if the OP gets allergic then the breeder should take the puppy back - most responsible breeders insist on this anyway.

don't want to put a downer on you, but my OH wanted a cat, and was allergic to 'normal' cats, but when they spent time with a load of siamese kittens they didn't get a reaction, so eventually purchased two of them. three months later the allergies kicked in big-time and now the cats live with me - it is the reason why we have never lived together despite being a couple of 14 years!

i hope this is not the case for you, but be prepared and do everything you can to minimise risk - petal cleanse wipes, daily hoovering, grooming regularly etc etc. good luck.

Cousins have a labradoodle. They specifically wanted it for allergies, and it turned out to mault more than anything I have ever seen in my entire life. The rest of the litter were fine. They have a lint roller by their front door to dehair visitors after. The dog walks and you see hair fall off it. Gorgeous dog, and great temperament, but it maults about the equivalent to a head of hair daily

someone else on here said that labradoodles moult, the lady that is selling the springerdoodles say that there has been very little hair on the floor from the dogs so I have to take her word for it, she seems a genuine person who really didnt want to sell the puppies (thats why they are 11 weeks old and she has just put them up for sale) I think she has to sell them because she is going back to work and I suppose 8 puppies are a bit of a handfull. :o . We have chosen the curliest puppy who is a girl, tbh I think that unless i could live with a oodle for a while then im never going to know if they affect me or not, so im just going to have to bite the bullet and see. I will do my best to keep the house swiffered and the puppy clean. (she apparantly loves a bath). and buy some of those allergic wipes. I would always wash my hands after handling any dog anyway. The place where the dog will stay has laminate flooring so that can be swept and mopped everyday.
We are all excited about getting the puppy and we have another 2 dogs in our extended family so we will be able to all walk our dogs together on the beach or in the forest.

I will keep you all informed as to how it is going.

Fingered x'd that all will go well.

TBH I dont know why you never just went for the poodle full stop. At least you would have paid good money for a recognised breed and not a mongrel - but there you go - you had your mind made up from the start.

A springer and poodle mix is going to be very hard work for you as a family. The Poodle is one (if not the most) intelligent dogs bred and the springer comes pretty much close, If the springer is from a working strain then you really will have you hands full. I would suggest puppy classes now and then onwards for agility or field trials - will exercise the dogs mind as well as his body. A bored (mindless) dog is a destructive dog.

Please also get a copy of The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey and read it and refer to it often - packed full of excellent advice on how to get the best from you dog.

Good luck with your pup and lets hope allergies dont flare up - and hey theres always piriton to help with sneezing and itching ( I have to when gooming )

Congratulations on your new member of the family. Beaches and forests are two things that Springers love :j

They also love muddy puddles too

suki, Id already recommended Perfect Puppy - its the bible for new pups isnt it - but as you say, poodles are one of the most intelligent dogs and with the springer energy combined - would be excellent for agility/flyball or something - certainly not going to be a lap dog :)

One thing about get a cross, at least you will get mongrel rates from the insurers.

Would need to, to buffer the costs of being ripped off from a back street breeder

Just hoping the springer side was hip and eye scored - would hate to think of the wee thing carrying a genetic problem causing it to go blind come the age of two
