Music Magpie: new quick way to sell unwanted CDs

  • I have used them successfully in the past, but am currently still waiting for a payment by secure bank transfer that was supposed to have been sent 7 days ago. Reading some of their recent online reviews on Trustpilot and thereviewcentre it seems I am not the only one in this situation.

I am actually wondering if their business model is beginning to hit problems. If not now, at some time in the near future there will be a tipping point whereby more people want to sell CD's and DVD's than buy them. I imagine sales of new CD's/DVD's are even now falling at rapid rate of knots. Give it a couple more years and unlike vinyl which still has a niche collectors market they will become like VHS tapes, not even charity shops will want them. Not sure about games as I don't use them, but despite recently expanding into clothes, unless MM radically alter their business model, in its current form it is clearly destined to fail.

No doubt the owners will by then have made their wedge, if they haven't already and will happily walk away, but lets say I don't anticipate them launching on the stock market anytime soon.

I think this has already happened.

I predict one of two tipping points - either that outlined above, or the 'public wake up' that I outlined in post #477
  • I've used musicmagpie 4 times in the last 2 years: one batch of 52 DVDs in 2012, and 3 batches last month (92, 69, and 95). (I've been upgrading some of my DVD collection to BD!) They accepted all but 2 of the DVDs (and a few BDs) I sent them. One was declined for damaged artwork (I vaguely remember that one had a cut through the spine) and one for damaged disc (one looked a bit cloudy, I think, but played OK). I'm reasonably happy with their service. Their prices aren't great, but there are no selling fees (unlike Amazon marketplace), and it was nice to get rid of piles in just a few batches instead of dealing with individual sales, making umpteen trips to the post office (to get proofs of posting), and coping with dodgy amazon buyers. However, when their somewhat slow acceptance procedures have been completed, I do expect to be paid promptly. Sadly, like other customers, I've discovered that their "Depending on your bank and the kind of account you hold, this can take between 3 and 5 working days to clear" forecast is worthless. I'm on working day 8 at the moment for the first two of the three March batches. I've emailed them to ask if they are aware of any problems before I complain to my bank, although I'm sure it's not the bank's fault, based on my experience with faster payments and bank transfers from other organisations.

I don't have a story to tell, but would anyone above who's been wronged by Music Magpie care to fill in this form and see if the matter can be progressed further?

That was written at 12:55 a.m. today. Checked my current account again just now (10 hours later) and the 2 transfers have now shown up. :)

UPDATE (16:34). And I've now had a reply to my query to musicMagpie.
We’ve had some problems with our payments recently and unfortunately it looks like yours has been affected.

Some payments due to leave our account have been held for a longer time than our usual 3-5 working day period and this delay has regrettably affected the payment that was due to credit to your account.

Payments made on either the 28th or 29thth of March should enter your account by the 8th of April, and payments from the 30th or the 31st should arrive by the 9th.

As we can’t find details of individual payments once they’ve been sent we would suggest contacting your bank to make sure that there is a payment waiting to enter your account.

We are sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause, but do be assured that we’re working as hard as possible to ensure that these payments are with you by the dates specified above.
  • My third payment from musicMagpie, sent on 4th April - according to their email - appeared in my Halifax current account today (15th April).

I would never I repeat NEVER EVER use this service! Took forever for the cheque to come through and I didn't get all the money I was promised! Some of my items got rejected instead of being returned to me were probably sold on for a profit whilst I got NOTHING!! MY ADVICE DONT NOT GO THERE UNDER ABY CIRCUMSTANCES. Their customer service is terrible when I rang up to ask why I didn't get all my money they told me it wasn't their problem and was apparently in the terms and conditions. I future well sell it on ebay they only pay 25p anyway and won't pay for for all your items! It's disgusting! DO NOT USE! EVER!!!

Their courier was scheduled for Monday.. I waited in 8am-8pm ... they never turned up. I emailed customer services, no reply. Still waiting.
I hear the cry of the silence around me.
  • Hello
I am not sure if this is the right place to post but i am looking for a bit of advice.

Approx 2 months ago i upgraded my phone and decided to sell my old phone I Phone 5 to one of the recycling companies. Envirophone offered me £173 and music magpie offered me £193.50. Obviously i took music magpies offer. I had read some reviews and yes saw a few bad ones but im a firm believer that reviews are always down to personal experiance so decided to give the benefit of the doubt, very stupid of me i have now realised.

I sent the phone of and heard nothing for about 2 weeks, i contacted customer service who said they hadnt received it but give it a few days. I gave a few days and then suddenly received an email saying the phone had been received, long story short 2 weeks later they emailed to say that the phone wasnt in the condition it should be so was offering me £125, the phone was in immaculate condition so i declined the offer and politely asked them to return the phone to me.

2 weeks passed and still no phone back to me, despite emails stating the courier had it and was delivering back. I contacted customer service who explained that they had no idea what has happend and no tracking info.
Another week passed and still nothing, i then contacted customer service again who basically told me and i quote there words 'it was a odd one' they basically have no idea what has happened and apperently the phone was being sent back to them. This made me mad as i know full well someone has always been in the house and even if someone has not been in surely a card saying we called and you werent in etc would have been posted.
Another week passed and i was told that they were looking into it but no one seems to know what has happened but assured me the phone would be back with me in a few days. A few days passed and i contacted again only to be told that they had no tracking info and apperently the phone should have been received to them on 30th June 2014 but it hasnt been, they said it looks like they have to put a missing claim in.
I have told them i am disgusted with the service and i want the original amount offered plus compensation, which i know is highly unlikely. I have now contacted them every day only to be told they are very sorry but dont know what has happend, they say they cant give me any money as it is in the process of being returned yet apperently it appears the phone has gone missing.
Now i am out of pocket and what is quite an expensive item and no idea what to do next.
I have threatened to take them to trading standards but i have no idea what to do or where to go for advice.
Can anyone help me in this matter? Anyone had similar dealings with them?
Please do not use them , they are clearly untrustworthy and reading some reviews a very bad company.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    thank you :-)
