Music Magpie: new quick way to sell unwanted CDs

  • We used music magpie to clear out 100 CDs/DVDs. Granted some of the items were only offered a tiny value but we received over £50 in addition to an awful lot of shelf space. Not worth it if you value the items you have but if you are not using them and don't think you're likely too, its a lot less hassle than selling on Facebook or Ebay.

It took about 3 weeks for the money to arrive which felt like a long time.
  • Hello
I am not sure if this is the right place to post but i am looking for a bit of advice.

Approx 2 months ago i upgraded my phone and decided to sell my old phone I Phone 5 to one of the recycling companies. Envirophone offered me £173 and music magpie offered me £193.50. Obviously i took music magpies offer. I had read some reviews and yes saw a few bad ones but im a firm believer that reviews are always down to personal experiance so decided to give the benefit of the doubt, very stupid of me i have now realised.

I sent the phone of and heard nothing for about 2 weeks, i contacted customer service who said they hadnt received it but give it a few days. I gave a few days and then suddenly received an email saying the phone had been received, long story short 2 weeks later they emailed to say that the phone wasnt in the condition it should be so was offering me £125, the phone was in immaculate condition so i declined the offer and politely asked them to return the phone to me.

2 weeks passed and still no phone back to me, despite emails stating the courier had it and was delivering back. I contacted customer service who explained that they had no idea what has happend and no tracking info.
Another week passed and still nothing, i then contacted customer service again who basically told me and i quote there words 'it was a odd one' they basically have no idea what has happened and apperently the phone was being sent back to them. This made me mad as i know full well someone has always been in the house and even if someone has not been in surely a card saying we called and you werent in etc would have been posted.
Another week passed and i was told that they were looking into it but no one seems to know what has happened but assured me the phone would be back with me in a few days. A few days passed and i contacted again only to be told that they had no tracking info and apperently the phone should have been received to them on 30th June 2014 but it hasnt been, they said it looks like they have to put a missing claim in.
I have told them i am disgusted with the service and i want the original amount offered plus compensation, which i know is highly unlikely. I have now contacted them every day only to be told they are very sorry but dont know what has happend, they say they cant give me any money as it is in the process of being returned yet apperently it appears the phone has gone missing.
Now i am out of pocket and what is quite an expensive item and no idea what to do next.
I have threatened to take them to trading standards but i have no idea what to do or where to go for advice.
Can anyone help me in this matter? Anyone had similar dealings with them?
Please do not use them , they are clearly untrustworthy and reading some reviews a very bad company.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    thank you :-)

I would suggest you take them to small claims... I think at the moment you can pick up a N95 claim form online and just file.. I think it costs 95 pounds but if you win then you should get that back plus compensation.

I am sick to death of all people getting ripped off by music magpie or cash converters etc... I understand that they are a business but it would be nice to have a business which is reasonable and not just in it for the profit.

we all know that for example cash converters will use the internet to find out what your item costs to buy second hand.. i.e. 100 quid and then offer you 25 quid for it then sell it for the 100 quid themselves. making them a huge 75 quid profit... you can argue they need to employ people and premises but i dont know of any other business which makes such a huge markup of something intangiable.

i am in the process of setting up an ethical business where if you want something to sell i will only make a thirty percent margin. i.e. the 100 quid item i will offer you 50 quid then sell for 65-70. that means youre happy, my buyers are happy as they get the item for less and i am happy since you will come back and do business.

They are willfully slow at paying out. Theyve had my stuff a fortnight eadily now and still no sign of progressing past the 40% marker its been sittinv at.

    Avoid.
  • I tried a number of sites for CDs and DVDs and WeBuyBooks seemed to offer the best price so I proceeded to scan my CDs/DVDs. The barcode scanning app kept crashing on my Samsung Galaxy S2, and when it was working rejected about 50% of my items. I tried some of the failed ones again and some worked some didn't. I contacted their customer support who told me their database is updated frequently from Amazon and this is expected behaviour. Because it took so long to come back with a response, sometimes failing and crashing it took me almost 2 days to process my 400 items. Their packing rules are quite rigorous but the processing and payment was quick, sent items 18/02/15 money in account 04/03/2015 and about 4 items rejected for bad scratches. I used MusicMagpie for the rest and the barcode scanning app worked flawlessly and quickly and it accepted 99% of the remaining items and the whole precess took a couple of hours, that said their processing and payment was far slower, sent items on 18/02/15 and money not in bank yet though regularly informed of status. You may be luckier with the WeBuyBooks app but it was dreadful for me; I did give them feedback. Oh, and MusicMagpie packing rules are not as fussy i.e. number of items / weight of boxes

Music Magpie are willfully slow for payment. Genuinely willfully.

Very frustrating. Your item has arrived with us (several days pass), your item has been checked (several days pass), your item is now with the testing team (a week passes), your item has passed testing and is with the payment team, several days pass. THEN you get an email - "please validate your payment details" which frankly is a nonsense and just a way to slow the process down - and then back to payment team, then a number of days later payment sent.

    Woeful.

I've used music magpie before without any problem. This time, as others have posted, long long wait, 6 weeks and I wondered if I was ever going to get my money. It has finally arrived but I won't be using them again.

It's inevitable that sites that buy CDs and DVDs will not pay so much as these become less sought after. In fact it won't be long before more people are selling than buying.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Just a quick post about my experience with both WeBuyBooks and Music Magpie.

I had 2 parcels, one for WeBuyBooks and one for Music Magpie.

Both sales were agreed on Sunday 12th April.

The WeBuyBooks parcel was dropped off at a collection point on Monday 13th April.

The Music Magpie parcel was collected by courier on Tuesday 14th April.

I received payment from WeBuyBooks on the 23rd of April, 10 days after posting the items.

Music Magpie........well......parcel arrived at depot on the 17th, transferred to warehouse on the 20th of April...and now the items have spent 8 days (so far) being passed to the testing team.

Needless to say I'll be using WeBuyBooks again.
  • anyone used ziffit?

As others have said they are very slow to pay out - I assume that they have often sold the item by the time they make payment.

I sent my Galaxy S4 off about five weeks ago - they are paying what they offered but I'm still waiting to be paid a week after I confirmed my bank details - yet another way they slow things down.

Whilst I'm confident I will get paid this is not a place to go if you need the cash in anything other than a slow time.
