Music Magpie are willfully slow for payment. Genuinely willfully.

Very frustrating. Your item has arrived with us (several days pass), your item has been checked (several days pass), your item is now with the testing team (a week passes), your item has passed testing and is with the payment team, several days pass. THEN you get an email - "please validate your payment details" which frankly is a nonsense and just a way to slow the process down - and then back to payment team, then a number of days later payment sent.

    Woeful.

Same here. I sent 2 orders - 1 tiny and 1 more substantial - at the same time (because their complicated system would not let me add to a saved order). Strangely, the larger priced order took nearly a week longer than the cheap one to even ARRIVE. I've had the email to verify bank details for the small one. I've also had an email on the large order saying I would get a request to verify my bank within 3 working days ... but that was 5 working days ago and still nothing.

And it will take 'up to 3-7 working days' to pay into the bank. What does that even mean? Up to 3, or up to 7? (I can guess!)

This was my first time using them, and will probably be the last. I hate the constant updates about how long things take, emailing at every stage, as if they believe you'd think things were moving quicker. I'd rather they just said it would take 6 weeks to process it in the first place.

Interestingly, all my emails from them have been on Mondays and Thursdays - do they only work 2 days a week?

I sent my DVDs in March and I think it took a total of 6 weeks to get paid. I finally received the money the following day when I put a negative comment on trustpilot - which seems like a massive coincidence. However the review was taken down, and even though I sent evidence of my order, they never put it back up.

I'm now at 8 weeks since my things were collected and, despite going online and verifying my account details 3 times for the larger order, it still won't update. Last week I sent a message asking why. I got an automated response (on Thursday) and have just had a reply today (Monday) asking for my bank details by email and reminding me that payments take up to 5 working days.

So I'm guessing I'll have the funds in my account next Monday then ...? Or does the 5-day count start from when they actually read my reply?

Moral of the story - if I ever do decide to use them again, just send lots of small orders and make them do a lot more collecting. Not very 'green' but they obviously don't like paying out larger amounts.

Surprisingly, if you are a higher rate taxpayer, you might find you earn as much or more, if you donate to Oxfam.

I donated a big batch of CDs and vinyl to them, as it would have taken 100s of hours of effort to sell them on eBay and MusicMagpie would have offered pennies or turned them down. About 6 months later I got a letter from Oxfam saying that the ones they had sold so far had raised £350! They must be selling them at big prices! (I had already checked, and these were not collectors items or rarities.) They wanted confirmation that it was a gift, so they could claim gift aid.

So, not only did I save hours of effort and raise £437 for charity, but, as a bonus, I can also claim higher rate relief for gift aid, which will save me about £80 tax. That's way more than I would have got from MusicMagpie.

  • Hours wasted scanning individual items, only for collection to fail on several attempts. The response from the company was very tardy and careless. Such a shame so much time and effort was disregarded, but I hope that means I'll discover a vastly superior company.

This one sounds like it's on the way out.

Unlike hevla, I've been very impressed with Musicmagpie's recent performance.

It used to take about 5-7 weeks from collection to receipt of payment in my bank account, but they've improved their act considerably: orders received before 2 p.m. are now paid on the same day.

Here are the details for my last 4 orders:

    Collection date: 20/11/15
Received, processed, authorised for payment: 24/11/15
Payment received in bank account: 25/11/15 (£14.65)

    Collection date: 23/11/15
Received, processed, authorised for payment: 26/11/15
Payment received in bank account: 27/11/15 (£27.06)

    Collection date: 4/12/15
Received, processed, authorised for payment: 7/12/15
Payment received in bank account: 8/12/15 (£26.70)

    Collection date: 8/12/15
Received, processed, authorised for payment: 11/12/15 (Friday)
Payment received in bank account: not yet received (next working day is tomorrow) (£38.49) UPDATE: payment in bank account 14/12/15.

I've never had a missed collection: the MyHermes courier has always arrived on the agreed collection date. It's been the same courier for at least the last 4 years, which probably helps!

Musicmagpie even take notice of complaints. They rejected 2 of my DVDs - one not sent, they said, and one without a barcode - but when I explained, politely, why I thought they were wrong, they paid me for them.
  • I've also used them in the last week - collected the CD's on the Friday, money in bank on Tuesday.

I had used them earlier in the year and the payment took weeks but it seems like they've sorted that out.
  • I never really bother with these reviews unless the service is great or really, really bad.

On this occasion I'm sorry to say it was diabolical. They offer peanuts for goods. It takes far longer than advertised to get all your items uploaded to the point they are ready to pack and send (even with the app and barcode reader) about 10% of the items are not listed on their database and therefore cannot be sold but the final nail in the coffin is that no one turned up to pick up the items after registering online for a pick up. I waited in all day (as i don't leave valuables on my doorstep.... anything can happen) and no one came - I actually work for a living and could of spent my time better than waiting for someone to pick up the items and not turn up.

I raised the query with Customer Support and have now, after 4 days heard nothing back.

In a simple word "DON'T" You'll get next to nothing..... if they even bother to turn up. This is the second time this has happened in pretty much exactly the same way and I have used the service twice.
  • Ziffit has worked well for me. They don't take much in the way of books - general fiction will rarely get you much/any money but I've sent one parcel off for £50 and another for £30 and received payment fairly quick. Only item I didn't get the agreed money for was a CD with no CD inside. Ooops.
  • Please be careful- I just sent three boxes to Music Magpie and Ziffit and BOTH claimed they hadn't received one parcel. When I gave them the tracking code, they magically found the parcel and paid immediately. Even though it had been a long time since they were sent. Clearly a way that they are trying to scam you.
