Hi everyone hope we're all having a good day?
I've been food shopping and am quietly hopeful I'll come in under the new budget this month too *fingers crossed & frugal cooking being done*I have got some more red lentils today as I'm going to make the lentil pate - finally! I think that DH & I will like it as a dip with carrot sticks etc.
What's for tea tonight? It was a great idea yesterday it's amazing how you gain ideas from seeing what others are having. We're having sweet & sour chicken with egg noodles. I bought the Asda smart price jars of sauce & I'll only use 2 chicken breasts between us all and pad it out with the usual array of veggies & a tin of pineapple pieces :rotfl: It works out cheaper to buy the jars than making enough quantity of my own sauce
gammon steak from mr costco with tomato and rosemary sauce and HG salad leaves here...
well done on being well in budget again this month :T:beer:
loocyloo, I was a bit:eek::eek::eek:at the thought of bottom of the fridge soup.... until I worked out what you meant!:rotfl:

Approved foods do Tip Top at some rediculously low price. Its about 4 tins for £1 I think. I hadnt had it since I was a kid, but mmmmm I just enjoyed it. The tin had been stored in the fridge, so it was lovely and thick and creamy!.
what's approved foods? sounds like a place i should discover!!!

I am no good with links. But at the beginning of the June Grocery Challenge there are all sorts of links, and one of them is this Cash and Carry place that sells stuff that is near their sell by date, or past date, but not the one that is dangerous. Its nearly all tins, and packets, and stuff like that. The delivery can be high depending on how you do it, but so far, the fee I have paid has been well worth the goods that I received.!
I will see if I can do a link
OOps its not the Grocery challenge its Live on £4000 a year one. http://www.approvedfood.co.uk/When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

yategirl my friend who's a dietician has a soup night. She says it's really healthy, cos it kinda resets your brain back into good portion sizes for an evening meal, but still keeps you full up til the morning, as it has (blitzed soup) twice the evacuation time from the stomach, so your fuller for longer...
anyhow, good idea lass! I may join you, but acetate monkey won't!!!
that is interesting to know... I always hated soup - not the taste but I always felt hungry quite quickly afterwards... (and that was with dm's hm soup not tinned soup) but now I find it is a good meal and yes, does keep me full! DH hated soup and hated the thought of soup night but.... has realised that I make thick soup not watery soup like his dm makes so has been quite happy... so far!!0 -

anyhow, good idea lass! I may join you, but acetate monkey won't!!!I always make a pudding for soup nights so this Saturday we are having soup & naan breads followed by apple pie & ice cream
It also helps to fill up the elder boys too who are like human dustbins with hollow legs. Sounds a bit like AM Weezl!
I love gammon steaks your meal sounded yummy. I like them with new potatoes and parsley sauce as well. Not many people eat it that way though I can't decide if it's a Yorkshire thing that I've inherited from my parents or if they're just strange :rotfl:0 -

My mother always served gammon with parsley sauce but with mash. SHe was from Yorkshire originally but I grew up in wales, I always thought thats how everyone ate it!!!! I still serve parsley sauce now but I'm not THAT keen on it0 -
Another vote for approved food here. On the food and grocery board there are 2 approved food threads, one general discussion and another to talk about the food. There have been occassional duff items but mostly its fantastic and not all junk. If you use the altenative courier you get loads and they're good. Well worth joining the mailing list as they have offers on postage and stuff. I also like to support them as it seems to be one bloke whose small business has gone beserk due to MSE. Dan who runs it seems like a nice guy too (no I'm not related
).
Eat food, not edible food-like items. Mostly plants.0 -
Hi everyone, I have just found this thread and its great..have read through a bit of it, I have lost the plot a bit lately after being much better with my food expenditure so need to get back to basics really... I have also decided that I want to improve ds's diet as I think he is having too many rubishy snacks..which I think might be making him a bit hyperactive...so I want to do some home baking for his pack ups and puds as he does have a sweet tooth...
I like the soup night idea, might go with that, my sister does something similar, a jacket potato night every week, sometimes its just beans or cheese and others it might be chilli, curry if hey have some leftovers....
thanks for all the lovely tips - off to read a zillion pagesJun GC £250.00/£12.40 NSD 3 / 30
