Fedupandskint, do you think you HAVE to skin the butterbeans? Sounds like it fits our lifestyle well apart from that one slightly faffy stage! Are the skins a bit tough and leathery?

I've done a butterbean soup recipe from good food and it says skin them. I've done it both with the faffing about skinning and without.

If you soak them overnight, it isn't too difficult to skin them, just boring and takes a while.

If you don't bother then if the soup is to be liquidized (mine was) then you do get a slightly funny texture from the bits of skin that weren't quite blitzed.

Still completely edible, just slightly different texture ;)

I prefer the soup with them skinned but it was such a faffing about job I can't be bothered to make the soup properly again

Just looking back for the boiled cake recipe.... ;)

hiya newlywed! are you still growing stuff on window ledges?

popped back to give a dahl update, with today's prices:

    350g red lentils
    20g jeera (cumin) seeds
750g onions chopped (I did chop these myself isom, but they made fergie's eyes go red!:o)
salt and pepper, garlic if desired

bung all of the above and at least 3-4 pints of water or stock into slo-cooker til lentils are all 'dispersed'...

15 pence and 220 cals per portion (Shaz that's 3 points per portion, you could have it with bread for a low point evening meal?)

  • Afternoon all,

Just a quick post to say I made the boiled fruit cake(s) today. Just tested one and it is yummy.

Weezl thank you for the recipe. Although doubtful i'll be getting 16 slices from one.

Also while i'm here, your recipe for the sandwich filling at the start of the thread. How do you keep them. I mean do they last in the fridge or do you freeze some of it?

Glad you liked the cake :)

I often make them up into 2 loaves worth of sandwiches and then freeze the sarnies. One defrosts in a morning in DH's lunchbox at work :D

So Weezl, now that you have so much time off ;) how about writing that book...

This one looks pretty good but I am sure they are nothing compared to your endeavours and it would have a whole new audience with the pregnant/new mums and dads market :D go on, go on, go on
