Skinning beans or chickpeas - well I've had many years of doing recipes with pulses - some years more than others - but I've never come across that idea before. Butterbeans have those awkward type skins from memory - but if you're doing a recipe where the skins are likely to start coming off - then, in my book, you know not to do that particular recipe again.

Fedupandskint, do you think you HAVE to skin the butterbeans? Sounds like it fits our lifestyle well apart from that one slightly faffy stage! Are the skins a bit tough and leathery?

I think it's better to skin the beans as the beans melt deliciously into the soup. I think it is this that thickens the soup up without the use of flour. It didn't take me too long to do that stage, once I got into a nice rhythm. Quite enjoyable really!

ETA: no controversy meant by the skinning beans, do whatever suits you and what you prefer when you cook :D

sorry, me again, with some research on BMR which I just calculated using this handy online calculator.

Turns out that to maintain our weight, we each need:

    acetate monkey 2558
    weezl 1675
    fergus 487

so, yes, Lunar eclipse, it does look like what I read implies that the woman wants to lose weight after having a child.... Unless I'm lots taller than the average gal!

Now Weezl it says the BMR is the rate if you were to stay in bed all day. Now I admit I don't know you in 'real life' but I am guessing you don't do that. I seem to remember rather a lot of decorating going on a while ago, boiling pig heads, washing environmentally friendly nappies, using massive amounts of brain power to do crazy calculations... So if you were to eat that amount I would have thought you would still lose weight as you are definitely burning off more calories!

hiya sian, how was the pudding last night? what veggies have you decided on for today?

I did multiply the figure by 1.2 which is if you don't lie in bed but your lifestyle is more sedentary...

I plumped for that one cos I seem to spend a lot of time sitting down giving Fergie his milk, he likes to guzzle for about 45 mins 6 times a day, so that's quite a lot of sitting!
    :D

LauraD can you post a bit more about the sorts of things you and your kin like to eat, and an average weeks shopping? Then we can see if we've any ideas to help cut down?;)

ps eta I'm not attempting to diet, just thought I ought not to carry on eating for 2 by accident IYSWIM?

hi! The pudding is actually for tonight, we are having a dinner party (lol, if you can call it that when you don't actually have enough chairs or cutlery matching for everyone) and I am doing the starter and main and my housemate is doing the pudding.
I ended up being up until 12:30 this morning making soup, poor time management I think :) I bought some tesco value peppers and butternut squash and I have some carrots in the fridge. With sweet potato mash that should be enough to feed the hungry boys.

Couldn't believe how much more AM has to eat than you Weezl, he must be pretty tall!

I remember that Delia Smith uses wholemeal flour in her lovely fruit cakes so that is how I'm using some of my January flour. ;)

So glad that I popped in to read this thread again. Loving the recipes. :D

he is 6 ft 3. Fergus is 1 ft 9. Most boys out grow their daddies, so I think I'm going to be a baking mummy to fuel that growth spurt!;)

when we first moved to our house we used to have to borrow chairs off the neighbours for dinners where more than 2 guests came!:rotfl:

Shaz, I've found the formula for how to work out points, so I'll see what I can do recipe wise. Seems that it's the amount of saturated fat that really ups the points value of something, so I might look for cakes you can make with oil rather than butter...:D
