shaz_mum_of__2 wrote: »Gingerbread
225g Plain flour
pinch salt
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon mixed spice/chinese 5 spice
1 teasp bicarb
50g sultanas(optional)
50g sugar
mix all these dry ingredients together in a bowl
150ml milk
2 eggs
mix these 2 ingredients in a jug
100g margarine
125g black treacle
100g golden syrup (you can use all syrup but it turns out lighter in colour)
Melt these 3 ingredients gently in a pan or a jug in the microwave then allow to cool
Mix everything together (its quite a runny mixture) then pop in a greased and lined 8 inch square tin and bake gas 2 or 150c/300f for about an hour and half or until well risen and a skewer comes out clean
Will let weezl do the maths ..............however my treacle was from my stash from when it was 27p a tin last year and the ginger was about a quid for a 200g bag from the chinese grocers

ps thanks for the saag aloo recipe
I make it 80p for the whole cake if you use all syrup, cos alas shaz's bargain treacle has nearly tripled in price since then! So if you get 10 slices that's an impressive 8p per portion, or if you get 8 slices that's 10p per portion which is still great!

But would one slice be enough? DH would typically have 3 slices of a loaf style cake such as a gingerbread (loaf) cake. Even the children would have (to be restricted to) two slices.
Also wanted to mention that calorie intake is supposed to be based on your weight, although an intake of 1200 calories is a typical diet intake, presumably based on the assumption that most new Mothers are trying to lose weight? Personally it wouldn't give me enough energy and my children are now a little older. So do take care of yourself.
(Fyi, I know from gym assessments that my base metabolic rate is something like 1700 calories, which is the calorie intake at which my weight would remain steady without any additional exercise. A lower intake and/or a deficit created by doing exercise and I lose weight etc. You could probably find yours online if you wanted to.)0 -

Hiya fedupand skint:beer:
your recipe sounds fab, can you tell us how?:A
Of course I can, here we go. I have 'borrowed' this from a very indulgent person indeed. Funny how it ended up on here
Butterbean soup
250g dried butter beans
125g pearl barley (give or take this amount depending how much you have I used 90g)
2 parsnips
3 carrots
1 onion
parsley (if you have it in the fridge, garden or want to buy it)
bayleaf (again if you have one fresh or dried)
500g potatoes
2-2.5L chicken stock (either HM or cube)
1tbsp caster sugar
Soak the beans and barley overnight. After this remove the butterbean from the outer skins.
Chop all the vegetables and parsley finely. Put everything in a large pan. Bring to the boil and reduce heat and simmer for 2hrs. Stir every now or then if it looks like it's sticking
It can get a bit thick so you might need to add more water/stock to thin out slightly.
Season to taste (go easy on the salt if you've used a cube or 2)
It might look a bit off a faff but it's easy after the bean skin removal.
I think you alter this easily to what you have in, now I didn't price it as I just needed a recipe to use up the 2 bags of dried butter beans that I had somehow bought! Thankfully I really liked it, hope you do too!

So I have managed to purloin some sausages for my meal tomorrow night which will keep costs low. I was going to do sausages in guinness gravy (drool
) with sweet potato mash and then some roasted veggies. What do you think will go best veg wise?
My friend has given me an amazing broccolli and stilton soup recipe too which I am going to make but I wrote it on an envelope and have managed to put it in the post with some other things, oops... Cheap bread packet mix from a while ago and I think I have a meal... My housemate is making the pudding, she won't tell me what it is but given that it is called Fattening Surprise I can't imagine it is particularly low in calories!God is good, all the time

Acetate monkey will be over later....;)
Fedupandskint, do you think you HAVE to skin the butterbeans? Sounds like it fits our lifestyle well apart from that one slightly faffy stage! Are the skins a bit tough and leathery?

sorry, me again, with some research on BMR which I just calculated using this handy online calculator.
Turns out that to maintain our weight, we each need:
acetate monkey 2558
weezl 1675
fergus 487
so, yes, Lunar eclipse, it does look like what I read implies that the woman wants to lose weight after having a child.... Unless I'm lots taller than the average gal!

Just googled and these two recipes use dried butterbeans but don't say anything about skinning them:

Hmm...just tried the BMR, not sure what happened. It says I need to have 2056 calories to maintain my weight
That's crazy!!! Isn't it?
Weezl I am going to try your boiled cake tomorrow. I now have supplies of dried fruit. OH was licking his lips. Though if I tell him it's one of his 5 a day, he'll eat the lot!! And no he doesn't really understand the 5 a day concept! Will let you know how it turns out.
