    morning shaz!

as we're both on a health drive, I'll carry on listing the calories per portion as well as costs, in case that's useful to other people! I read that women who aren't breastfeeding should aim for 1200 cals per day after having a baby, which is such a lot less than the 2200 per day they recomend during the last trimester of pregnancy, that I find I'm needing to be a bit watchful that I don't just blithely carry on as I was!!!!

about the fruitcake, it may well be the one you mean, my mum passed it on to me, and my granny used to make it, but not sure where originally from? :) Does the ginger sponge have ground ginger or crystalised ginger? if it's ground it's probably really frugal, recipe please!

good tip about the 5 spice, is it quite aniseedy?

    love weezl xxx

    great recipe ISOM :D

on the health and beauty front, fitting that into £1 per day...

    110776.jpg?ts=633606146060

one of these lasts 7 weeks (10ml a day for me, wash hair every day, 10ml every 2 days for Acetate monkey...) and is only 12p a bottle for 500ml.
    036491.jpg?ts=633002185040

one of these lasts same time and is 25p, so hair washing is a very cheap (dirt cheap :) ) 5.2p per week.

We share one of these every 2 months too....

    037950.jpg

hope that doesn't sound gross, our pits are clean when we apply it!

    038946.jpg?ts=632928879280

now I just need to work out how much of this we use per day...

We use these too... barr the deodrant - I use bicarb like a talc under my arms after a shower - a pot lasts me 2-3 months (and works for me whereas deodrant doesn't... :o) DH atm just has whatever smells nice and is not too ££ but... he is being made redundant and is finishing at the end of the month :( so smartprice deodrant it is going to be.....

The boiled fruitcake - let me get the recipe clear - you put the first lot of ingredients in a pan and literally boil for the time stated... then you mix in the flour and transfer to the cake tins? I will be having a go as it sounds yummy :)

pps- sorry I forgot to say that Mr Weezl has 13 slices per cake out of the two loaf tin cakes of the boiled fruit cake, and so it counts as one portion of his '5 a day' as it contains at least 20g of dried fruit per serving.:T:T:T

yes! but wait til the boiled bit has cooled, or when you add the beaten eggs, they'll scramble on first contact with the hot sticky liquid! ;)

1200 calories???? That sounds very low indeed, are you sure you won't be fainting left, right and centre? Eep

    Gingerbread

    225g Plain flour
    pinch salt
    2 teaspoons ground ginger
    1 teaspoon mixed spice/chinese 5 spice
    1 teasp bicarb
    50g sultanas(optional)
    50g sugar

mix all these dry ingredients together in a bowl

    150ml milk
    2 eggs

mix these 2 ingredients in a jug

    100g margarine
    125g black treacle
100g golden syrup (you can use all syrup but it turns out lighter in colour)

Melt these 3 ingredients gently in a pan or a jug in the microwave then allow to cool

Mix everything together (its quite a runny mixture) then pop in a greased and lined 8 inch square tin and bake gas 2 or 150c/300f for about an hour and half or until well risen and a skewer comes out clean

Will let weezl do the maths ..............however my treacle was from my stash from when it was 27p a tin last year and the ginger was about a quid for a 200g bag from the chinese grocers

    Shaz

ps thanks for the saag aloo recipe

Well it does feel quite low, on the days I've managed it! but I do find with all the jobs and long hours of looking after Fergie that I am pretty hungry :o:D...I wonder too whether it's harder to fight off the effects of post-baby tearfullness when not consuming many calories! (not that I've had lots of this, just the odd day... :) ) Hmmmmmn interesting thought sian, maybe I'll up it a bit?

The saag aloo is in the slow cooker and in typical style i have tweaked

    Saag Aloo

    Makes 12 servings

1 kg potatoes, - 29p, chop into ½ inch dice(i used half the amount and made up the difference with chick peas)

1 large 575g tin spinach- 77p, drained, keep the liquid(my tin was bigger 795g for 74p at mrM and i didn't drain it as there was hardly any liquid)

    500g chopped onions- 40p
Dessertspoon Cumin,(had none left? so used ground coriander also added a tsp turneric and tablespoon of methi)
3 cloves garlic, 6p, chopped, crushed or grated(2 teasp from a jar)
½ teaspoon chilli, (1 tsp chilli flkes)
    fresh coriander, 5p, I used a tenth of a 50p bunch(free from garden )
    salt
    100ml veg oil - 9p(didnt use)

all prices from weezls recipe last year

i have just bunged it all in the slowcooker on high until the potatoes are cooked

I was going to make rice and spinach balls but it might be too much so will do another day

will dig out recipe and post later
