Wow, this is headache inducing!
I can't help but wonder if they mean 'gem' as in it's described as a gem, rather than it is a gem/jewel?
But I'm still none the wiser, will have a break for lunch and search again after if the answers still not found!0 -
It's not melon
And the first I tried was pearl so it's not that.
Gad, this is impossible.

Could it be agate? The picture could be a gate.
Agate is mentioned in one of William Shakespeares poems. Agate is a gemstone. Just another slant on things,0 -

This is bugging me now, can't seem to drag myself away from the laptop
On googling I keep finding the name 'Washington Irving' connected to the Alhambra and on search a bit more it seems he has written poems so I wonder if it's to do with his description of it?
Edit: He's American which could account for the America reference in the 'Alternative Route' clue? And wiki says "The palace Alhambra, where Irving briefly resided in 1829, inspired one of his most colorful books." which fits??
Am I on the right route here??
Edit 2: He also wrote 'The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus' and Columbus discovered and named Guadeloupe?!0 -
