can't look at ebay today - what's the £270 CR610 .... I presume it's not the one that was £299 last week and around £345 yesterday?

    See post #845.

I posted before about needing a new laptop,i hoped mine could be saved but alas not. Anyway i mainly surf, watch dvds, word process and listen to music. Iv'e curently got a toshiba but am tempted by Dell, tbh i don't know what there like though.

    Would this be good?http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-4937.aspx

I don't want to spend to much but on the other hand i want something good for my money, i also can't stand Vista

    Many thanks
  • I've been searching again for an alternative to my Acer aspire 3690. My first stumbling point is the processor, which I'm not clued up on at all. My current laptop is a Celeron M. Now that means diddly squat to me. When googling aspire 3690 the current spec appears to be

    celeron M processor 1.6ghz
    Windows XP
    15.4'' TFT
    512 MB RAM
    60 GB HD

My budget is around the £350 mark
    Comping wins

    May 2013: Sausage Roll :D
Keep calm and carry on comping

    No.

Wasn't the problem with the Toshiba fixable? I think that you were quoted £30. Together with courier fees, that would be no more than £50. You can then downgrade to XP.

Iv'e got the power port problem and the seems to be another problem with the laptop, my OH has cleaned it up but it frequently crashes (several times a day). I'm not sure whats causing the laptop to crash.

The power port problem can be fixed without the Hard drive being inside the machine. So no need to worry about your sensitive info.

Running Vista Home Premium on 1GB RAM probably doesn't help.

Possible course of action: Remove HDD, fix power port problem. Purchase new HDD for around £30. Buy a caddy for your old HDD £3.80 Black available too.

Run a fresh install with a Toshba XP disc as there just isn't enough RAM for Vista Home Premium.
You'll have a faster laptop with a higher capacity HDD and a 120GB external HDD for just over £80. You can move your stuff over at leisure.

I've sure that for a small surcharge you can ask your friendly repair man to check over the hardware once the power port is fixed.

Thanks Donnie but as i don't know the guy that quoted the price it would be very risky to send my laptop out like that :(

Don't be silly. Do you really think that the technician is going to do a runner with your second hand laptop with a broken power port and no hard drive?? Especially when your courier delivery item should be tracked and insured.
Especially when they take their time to help here for free. What are you thinking?
I'd be ripping his arm off.

Some people are just like that, they'd rather have newer and better than fixed and cheaper (my sister's one of them). Not very moneysaving but no point getting angry at them and potentially scaring them away from the forum just cos they don't take your advice.

Personally I agree and, for that price, I'd get the old one fixed regardless of whether I actually wanted a new one, if nothing else they can then flog it to meet some of the price of the new one, but it's their choice, their money.
