I'm after a basic laptop under 300, is the medion akoya refurb from ebay argos any good? It's on there around 250 quid but the specs seem top notch, is it reliable machine?

Who knows? That's why you have a warranty. It has Vista Home Premium installed. I imagine that, together with the 'functional' look and the poor battery life are the most obvious negative points.
If none of those bother you, you are on to a winner. :)

Maybe you can wait a few days, in order to see if anything else pops up within your price range.
  • Hi,
Please help as I'm not v. technical!
I have £400 to spend on a new laptop. I want it to have either a Pentium dual core or a Core i3 processor. Ideally 4gb memory and preferably 500gb storage. I've been looking round but got myself in a muddle and since I've had to save up for months and months and months to get this money I want to spend it wisely. I'd be ever so grateful for any suggestions.
    Thanks Al

Have spent ages trying to find a laptop that I like. Now trying to decide between different versions of the ASUS X5 DIJ

    There are 2 at ebuyer:
    SX 355V - £399.99 ebuyer dot com/product/189889
    SX 331V - £397.99 ebuyer dot com/product 189888

    and one at Dixons
SX247V - £399.99 dixons dot co dot uk/gbuk/asus-x5dij-sx247v-04895290-pdt.html#tab-promo-packs (sorry won't let me post links)

All seem to be nearly the same with very slight differences.

Can anybody please see any significant differences except between RAM and hard drive storage? I won't need 500GB of hard drive, but will need one that is capable of running multiple programmes.

Any other advice would be welcome - thanks

    @ Donnie,

Thanks for your advice above Donnie. After reading through the last few pages of this thread and some of my own research I got the Asus X5 from the Argos clearance e bay shop a week ago and have been giving it a good test since it arrived. It looks as if it is brand new rather than a refurb and is perfect for my requirements of general surfing, e mail, skype chat and the odd document here and there, music download and photo's.

Added Thunderbird as an e mail client, Open Office to follow soon and some photo software and I'll be fully sorted.

Thanks again for your suggestions. Much appreciated.

PS @ InDebted2U (post 680) - It wasn't your one, there were 11 left after I got mine. Enjoy the MSI
  • You must have snapped up the one I was going to buy! :rotfl: The ASUS X5 DIJ? It was either that or a Toshiba, but both went overnight. Hopefully the MSI will arrive tomorrow. Looking forward to playing with it... er, I mean getting it set up for DS. :o

    Hi guys.
I'm looking for some help. I know vaguely what features I want, but can't seem to find a machine that incorporates them... I use my laptop probably an average of 12hrs a day and it's a lifeline. I run several things at once, including intensive things like music/video/games whilst on the net/msn/whatever too. I want the moon on a stick cos I want a good laptop for an even better price ;)
    I ideally want:
    i3(/5/7) processor
decent graphics card with it's own memory
ideally 4gb ram, preferably with room for more
large hard drive (320gb or so)
15.4"ish good screen for photos and dvds
dvd rewriter, if not blueray player
usual bluetooth and memory card readers
as long a warranty as possible
all for a ballpark of £500

I've been looking at the Acer Aspire 5740G (as recommended by BIL) but with extended warranty I can't seem to find it for less than £600

Any suggestions? I need to get something within the next couple of weeks, as my laptop died this weekend and I won't survive long without!

    Hi guys....

Maybe you can take a look at the subject title....
  • Hello everyone,
I am in need of some assistance, in my search for a new laptop two have caught my eye.

HP G61-410SA Refurbished at Currys. £330
    or
Advent Roma 3001 Refurbished at Currys. £320

Are either of these worth my time, or should I be looking elsewhere. I ahve about £350 to spend and would like to be able to surf and run Itunes at the same time which seems a problem for my current machine.

    Thanks in advance,

    John
