I replaced it with an XPS model about 6 months ago I couldn't be happier with it.

The thread is about laptops under £350.
The XPS kick off just under £1,000.

I would expect a £1k laptop to be better than a £350 one.
  • Hi, my son spends a ton of time on his computer, he uses it for gaming and talks to his friends over a headset, things like world of Warcraft. I've never been 100% happy with the amount of time spent on it but he takes after his Dad and I suspect he'll have an IT relates career, his IT teacher says he knows more than him and uses him as a teaching assistant! He makes his own games too and also posts those help-type videos on YouTube for well known games.

Anyway, he has what was a fairly powerful desktop PC at his Dad's and a very cheap net book at mine. He wants to ditch both and get a decent laptop so he just has one machine that can move with him (we have a 50/50 split of residency).

I have no idea what I am looking for and OH so far being unhelpful in this search. Can anyone recommend anything? I assume I won't get what I need for £350? If it's anymore I need to involve His Dad in costs - possible but he's a bit weird about joint presents now we are divorced.

Does anyone have an opinion on either of these two laptops and has anyone used this company before?

Im looking for a laptop for my uncle on behalf of my non techy aunt, his current one is about 5 years old and was a low end pc world job when it was brought and she wants to buy him a new one for xmas. He mainly does browsing, letter writing, listening to youtube and other music and video sites.

Slightly higher than £350 at £384 but this is the very latest 3rd gen i5 processor and has windows 8.
To get it for this price you`ll need to use this code to get it down to £384.(this weekend only)

One should not speak of what they don't know or risk looking stupid. I paid around £450 for my XPS (yes over £350 but well within the price range of laptops that have already been discussed here, despite the thread title, and certainly not £1000!). And my previous Dell was £315. My comments about my laptops were in relation to my previous statement that the poor Dell reputation was mainly on their low end consumer models (as opposed to business and higher end models). Perhaps read the comment properly before jumping next time.

It could not have been brand new.

I gave the link for new Dell XPS and they are not £450.

Just had a look at that link 2010 and I know nothing about computers so a dumb question coming up! is this http://direct.asda.com/Dell-15-3520-7369-Laptop---15.6ins---Intel-Core-i3---750GB-Hard-Drive/000550802,default,pd.html?cm_vc=PPCXSLTP worth the extra? really need to get one bought today. Also if I buy the Office software they're advertising for £89 do I need to install it on 3 pc's at the same time? I've only got 1 at the moment, but it looked like a really good buy. Really appreciate the feedback guys

The one in post #2816 is far superior and cheaper than the one in your link.
Today is the last day of the discount and if ordered you should get it by wed/thurs.

Can`t comment on the software but I know you can get free "office" software which does a similar job.
No doubt others will tell you about it.

I think one is call "open office" from Apache.
  • Thank you for the reply 2010, I'll get the cheap one ordered then! I've got open office on this laptop, it's good but when the kids try sending homework to school via school portals it won't allow it to be opened so got to spend to get the real thing unfortunately!
But thanks to you i'll still be better off than buying the other one.
