I'm thinking about getting my mum and dad a laptop for christmas as a surprise, my dad will only use it for surfing the net and for youtube but he does use it everyday for this and also uploading photos off his camera so card reader would prob be handy. It needs to be quickish on the internet. He currenly had a Dell that is prob about 4/5 years old which is soooo slow. Looking to spend £300 - £350 needs to be reliable, if its less than £300 even better! But parents will keep this for a few years so needs to be up to the job.

PC world and comet currently have this on offer
    ACER Aspire AS5733 15.6" Laptop

    Product code: 959612

    New for Christmas 2011

    £649.99
    £349.99
    Save a total of £300.00

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-aspire-as5733-15-6-laptop-11318192-pdt.html

I doubt it was ever £650 though and if it was I doubt for long! I have no idea about anything to do with computer so help would be so appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

That's a first gen i3 processor, for that money you should comfortably be getting a second gen (newer version). To tell them apart, the second gen i processors have a four digit number beginning with 2. For example this one is an i3-370 (three digits), if it was a second gen one it would be i3-2370
  • Any suggestions for me?

    Thanks

Thanks for explaining the difference about the processor but most of the cheapest 2nd gen processors are £400 any less than than this you have to be super quick to get one.

The ACER Aspire AS5733 15.6" Laptop comes with 6GB memory and 500GB hard drive and 1.3 MP web cam so I think it is good value for money

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/dell-inspiron-q15r-switch-15-6-laptop-black-10562071-pdt.html £381 2nd gen but only 3GB of memory and 1.0 mp web cam

I am thinking of buying this for my 12 year old daughter
http://www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk/Fujitsu-Lifebook-AH530-Laptop/id-FJS-COM-AH530-BK at £300 less £80 co-op vouchers that I have plus £20 for more memory, spill resistent key board and 1.3 MP camera for £240 not great but ok for my daughter.

Not surprising really but there's not much around this close to Christmas. If you buy Acer I suggest a 3 year warranty cover from Ebay.
    e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acer-Advantage-Notebook-Extended-Warranty-/130609745234?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL&hash=item1e68f28d52

would be fine, until I read this thread and found that the processor speed would be thought of as slow these days.

I'd grateful if anyone can shed any light on what to expect for the <£300 price.

I did notice from the Medion site that Sainsburys are doing these two:

    Medion Akoya E6221 Intel Core i3-2310M Processor 4GB/500GB 15.6" for £349.99

    Medion Akoya E6221 Intel Core i5-2410M Processor 4GB/640GB 15.6" for £399.99

I'd really appreciate it if anyone can tell me if either of these are worth spending the extra on, and if they sound reasonable.

    Many thanks :)

This should be ok. It has a faster processor P6200. And (proabbly) a better make than Medion.
