  • There are some hot deals going at the moment on refurbs at Currys/Dixons. Worth a look as i3 and i5's(first gen) for under £300.

    Hey all,

I am looking to buy a new laptop between £300 and £500 - larger than 15" display. No need for bluray player, just the most powerful i can afford.

The thing is, i can get tax back from Amazon (not marketplace), hence why i wish to buy from there.

Are there any decent laptops in the Jan sales at Amazon?

I have been posting on another thread about whether I should buy the acer have been advised to go for the Asus X54HSX270V but didnt like the appearance of it £349 at Comet The X53E SX947V £399THE X53ESX 1186 V at £449 were more pleasing to the eye but I have yet to take the plunge.
The Sony VPCEH2HIE at £449 I like the keyboard and I also have had a lot of Sony products over the years TV HI FI Camera etc but do not know how they compare on Laptops etc.

I went into Dixon yesterday and also the Sony store in my town and the keyboard is very well spaced and easy to type on. Really I should go back to Comet as Dixon had one Acer but no Asos. Some one on this forum is looking for a new laptop and she is 86 so never too old. It is just that we don't understand all the jargon.
I have been a complete nightmare on these boards trying to make a decision. BUT I will be 70! in Feb and have had a desktop Dell since 2064. I love my computer and this one is still working just fine. I would just now like the convenience of a laptop hence all this flurry. My Son says treat yourself but he does not think I should spend more than £399 . Someone said somewhere that they should wait until the end of the month as there may be lower prices. Comet had one asus which was discontinued at £379 but I worry that buying discontinued is probably not a good idea.
I am sorry to labour the point again. Maybe I should simply give my 15 year old Grandson the money and let him decide.
On another point I spoke to him on Sunday and asked him if I needed Office. He spoke to his Mum and it would appear that she has bought a new desktop and a laptop recently and he says that she bought an Office pack and it was for 3 computers. Could I use this to put it on my new laptop? He seems to think so although my Daughter didn't make me the offer. Maybe just an oversight. Thank so all so much for all the advice you have given me. I just really need to do it. The Sony shop are offering a 2 year guarantee which made it attractive. Advice very much appreciated

If you are happy with your desktop then a laptop may not be necessary unless you plan to take it out of the house. Also a laptop may not be as reliable as a desktop.
Re. laptop keyboard - if you don't like it you can use an external (USB) keyboard; same goes for the display (its quite easy to get a bad neck using a laptop).
The Asus at £350 is a good buy. If you don't like it just gift it to your son.

Once again Grumpy Thanks for your sound advice. It is just that the desktop sits on a desk half in and out of a cupboard facing a number of shelves in a spare room. However I can just shut the door and it is out of sight.
My son thinks that a laptop would give me the ability to use it anywhere I wished. He has always had both and says he uses the desktop less and less.
My Grandson has now 2 laptops they have a new desktop and my daughter has just also bought a new laptop so 3 laptops and 2 desktops in one household of 4.
My son wants me to treat myself and what I have decided is that I am going to have another look at the Asus you recommended. If and when I buy the laptop I will still keep the desktop and of course it was 2004 that I bought it not 2064 was confusing the age of the computer with the years! OOPS!
I had not thought about the neck problem with a laptop another reason to hold on to the desktop. I have had some work done on it over the years but nothing was broken just virus or some such thing. Was given Vista by my Nephew who works out in Seattle with MIcrosoft but in the end went back to the old XP on the advice of the chap who does any work I need on my computer.
    Many thanks again!
