Not all i5s are better than i3s according to CPU benchmark.

After much deliberating and browsing I have come to the conclusion that I like the look of two possible laptops.

    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/acer-aspire-5552-15-6-laptop-black-10945101-pdt.html

Weighs in at £330 and has improved graphics compared with:

    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/21427675/-/Product.html

Which is £70 more expensive but has considerable power.

It would mostly be used for internet and pictures etc, maybe playing a bit of football manager if given the chance :D.

So which is the best value for money?

What makes you think the first has got better graphics? Both are more than capable of what you want it for. The second is the better machine IMO (mainly thanks to the processor) but is priced as such too so depends on your budget.

They are pretty much the same in terms of processor performance and the rest of the spec appears the same. Just depends if you want AMD or Intel.

Do you need something so highly powered(expensive) for what you want to do with it?

Also look at John Lewis as you get 2 years warranty thrown in.

The two sites you mention aren't necessarily the most competitive.

Have you tried googling the basic spec to see what other options are available?

HP and the don't get many brownie points on this thread and the the outlet might not be the most competitive. Often the supermarkets T, S and even JL can often pop up better deals.
