Just posted a new thread for this before spotting this one so copying it over...
My son has been assessed and will be allowed to use a laptop for his GCSEs so I will be buying one for his birthday.
I don't want to spend more than about £300 - £350 but I'm sure he'll also want to use it for gaming (I'm aware a proper gaming laptop would be £1,000+!) but am just wondering if any in our price range are likely to have a better graphics card than others. Is there anything in particular we should be looking out for?
(I'm not technically competent enough to start replacing the graphics card!)
Thanks in advance
PS Wouldn't buy from ebay so needs to be proper shop!
If you don't mind paying £400 up front and getting £100 back:

13.3" so nice and portable for school/college, and it has a dedicated (albeit it pretty weak) graphics card.
Also worth a look:

£350, good cpu, great mid-range graphics card, but pink. This can be resolved by getting a skin to cover the lid from somewhere like here or spending £380 for the red version on the same site.0 -

Of course, if you just want cheap, the DELL and the Advent at £184 minus cashback are certainly that. Don't expect much in the way of battery life for the Advent and much in the way of performance from the DELL.0

I'm trying to replace our dead PC (RIP) with a laptop and are getting more and more confused on what to buy.
Any opinions on this one DELL Inspiron 15R 4GB Pentium Dual Core Laptop (Product code 673955) from Currys.
The laptop will be mainly used for internet, iplayer, word and excel and the budget is approx £400.0 -

No.
I would be looking at a second generation i3 or i5 processor with HD3000 graphics at that price.
£250 to £300 should cover your simple needs.0 -
Hi guys.
Unfortunately my current laptop is on it's last legs - so I am in the market for a new machine that meets my needs:
As well as the normal surfing/emails etc. - I use Photoshop and play some PC games on it too. A typical game would be Football Manager which carries recommended specs. of:
OS:
Windows XP/Vista/7
Processor:
XP : 1.4GHz or Faster
Vista / 7 : 2.0GHz or Faster
*Supported Processors: Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core, AMD Athlon
Memory:
XP : 512MB RAM
Vista / 7 : 1GB RAM
Hard Drive Space:
2GB
DVD-Drive:
4x Speed
Video Card:
128MB**
**Supported Chipsets - Nvidia FX 5900 Ultra or greater; ATI Radeon 9800 or greater; Intel i865G or greater.
Earlier cards may only display 2D Match Viewer Mode and are not supported.
Is it possible to get a laptop that would meet my needs for less than £350? - if not I am open to suggestions!
Thanks

Would this be a good laptop which suits my need. I just want to use for internet use, it will always be plugged into the charger (so battery life is no issue) - i want to pay no more than £350. I would prefer a 15inch screen0 -

If it were for your PhotoShop requirement, I might have suggested this ACER for £2880
