Microsoft Starter refers to the Office Package. The OS is Windows 7 Premium.

ACERs tend to have good specifications at the price points, though I don't have any experience of these machines and so am reluctant to wholeheartedly recommend them.
The specifications though are more than enough for your needs.
Rather too similar to their cheaper eMachines 640 for my liking. :)

As somebody who builds computers I don't recommend Acer as I've had a few bad experiences with them. Namely my friends keep buying them due to the appeal of the competitive pricing however every one of them seems to almost grind to a halt in the first few weeks. Then expect me to sort them out :)

If you do buy one make sure you get plenty of RAM. More than 2GB if possible.
  • Agreed you cannot get a gaming laptop for under £350. For that price you are looking at nice family laptop, good for internet etc.

But it's untrue to say you can't get a gaming laptop. Some laptops do come with decent graphics cards but you need to spend at least £800. In most cases more.

Can anyone recommend a laptop that is ideal for general surfing of the internet, facebook and e-mails. Don't really want to spend more than £400.00 and ideally the cheaper the better. Getting myself confusd with all the different types of laptops out there.

    Thanks

For those wanting a small light laptop (13.3"), 1.6kg, with semi decent dual core CPU, 4gb ddr3, windows 7 64bit, a radeon 4330 for a bit of odd light gaming, and 8 hour battery life you can't go far wrong with this imo

    £369

    Superb price imo.

Liking the look of this, if no better anyone can suggest, similar specs. and form for cheaper?

Getting it as a gift to replace an old dell inspiron, biggest complaint being that it's "big and clunky". (and the battery keeps dying and it's stuck together with sellotape!)

    Cheers.

Be aware that this has no CD/DVD drive. No good for gaming if you can't get the game on to it. :)

USB DVD drives are about £20 if needed.
A lorra games are delivered by steam or that EA platform. Or can install across a network if you have to. Can get round most DVD checks with virtual software or nodvd patch for older games.

    Hi folks

Can anyone advise on the best one to go for?

    This one http://www.it247.com/product/1/LNVSUA73/M41E2UK-Lenovo-B550-0880-Intel-Celeron-T3100-1-9-GHz-Processor-2GB-RAM-320GB-HDD-DVD-Writer-Intel-GMA-4500M-graphics-15-6-Display-Windows-7-Home-Premium.html?

    Or this one

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOSHIBA-C650-1CR-15-6IN-LAPTOP-REFURB-/330485435705

The Lenovo keyboard looks a bit better and there isn't much in processor wise. This is going to spend most of its time on a desk used for office 2007 .

    Any thoughts?

    Best

The (ebay) Argos Clearance site seems to be popular and has great prices but what are people's experience of a) buying a refurbished machine and b) after sale/warranty given that there's no 'shop' to walk into and seek help?
