Okey dokey - well we've caved!
The thermometer hit 12 degrees in my living room today - and I know if I toughed it out I'd probably get used to it but the gas fire is on as we speak!
To be honest this was in the works daaaaaays ago.
We spent the whole weekend fitting doors to make downstairs far less open plan. (I like the space of having it all open but if we're going to use the heat then we're going to keep it contained!)
Plus my son brought his new girlfriend round for the first time tonight, and I wanted the house to be all cosy, warm and welcoming - not arctic and frosty!
(She seems nice - and not at all demented so far...;) )

PS I don't feel so bad about this now I've seen that it's SNOWING!!!! :eek:Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Einstein0 -
It's been snowing heavily much of the evening here in Berkshire, and the thermostat is telling me it's about 7 - 8 degrees inside tonight. Still holding out for November for the heating, though - I have a duck down duvet, so no problems with sleeping, and I'm out every night this week, so hopefully the only problem will be persuading myself out of bed in the mornings! :rotfl:Never underestimate the power of the techno-geek...0

Yeah it was snowing here a little earlier. We had to set up the heating again to go on and off as it wasn't working!
It's sorted now, although I was cold by opening the door to have a look at the snow lol!0 -
This morning it is 11 degrees in my kitchen and 15 in my living room
I am holding on until 1st Nov - but I didn't think it would be this cold, so I'm feeling a bit stupid for sticking to my vow! Still, no kids or frail people in the house so it is no big deal.
Sparkly (or should I say Frosty?)0 -
I was watching GMTV this morning and there was a family on, who hadn't turned their heating on yet. The family had 2 small children but they didn't have socks on! Also, their front door opened into their livingroom and I was thinking to myself that I wished the camera crew would hurry up and get in and close the door because they'll freeze (obviously not freeze their socks off cos they had none lol )0

i have to say this because i feel so strongly on this!!
i would like to know what this country is coming to when simple eveyday people like us have to think this way, when something as important and neccesary as electricity and heating is crippling the consumers to the point where we are like the elderly of years ago having to put on layers rather than heat the house as its too expensive. yet the power suppliers still advertise the huge profits, and despite reductions in oil/gas prices it remains at top price. the banks fall into trouble and the government jump in with billions to save them, if they have had all that money spare to simply spend it now why have they not helped the counrty before and helped the very people they are supposed to be working for??
im not a financial wizzard that understands the monetary policy if thats what its called but i understand the familys with young babies and children and the elderly who are just simply freezing and worried and a lot of them ill.
it makes no sense to me at all, and disgusts me.self confessed 80's throwback:D

Louiser123 - good point and it is such a shame for anybody who genuinely cannot afford to put the heating on - in this day and age that really is travesty.
On the other hand I think a lot of people - me included- have seen this more as a challenge not to give the greedy gas and electricity companies any more money than we have too. In the past I know I have been pretty blase about the heating putting it on for long periods of time whether its cold or not and relying on a timer and a whacked up thermostat rather than my own inner temperature gauge:D
This morning I have clicked the heating on for the first time as it really was uncomfortably cold (9* just now  ) but i will still be much more aware this year than ever before - I know I am lucky I can afford the heating but i would rather not line the pockets of these companies by wasting it.0 -
Hey Louiser
Some very good points. Me, I don't have the heating on yet because I choose to (stubborn little me decided to try for no heating before November, and screwing the gas company after they doubled my monthly DD with my account well in credit feels GOOD!), and as I grew up in a house with no central heating I'm pretty used to just putting an extra layer on if I have to. Should it get stupidly cold during this week, though, I'm not going to let myself freeze. Unfortunately I don't have an alternative to the central heating in my house (no separate fire), although surfing the net in the evenings with my laptop on my knees has definitely helped! :rotfl:
I do feel genuinely sorry for those who can't afford heating, though. All my grandparents are well into their 80s, and are well enough off to heat their houses. If they couldn't, I'd be really worried for them right now...Never underestimate the power of the techno-geek...0 -
I'm afraid I've given in, the heating went on last night and again this morning. It's just that bit too cold now...Total debt at October 2008: £67,213.30

We don't have any heating ...
Hot water bottles, extra layers, opening the oven door after cooking a meal and woolly socks keep us going.
We both had the same as kids and it hasn't harmed us. If money weren't so tight of course we'd love to heat our place, but whilst we're 'poor' we can cope. We do have an oil-filled radiator, which runs for a very low amount of money per hour and gives off a bit of heat, which we will use when need be.Thrilled to be DEBT-FREE as of 26.03.10
