The wife has had the weather on loads recently, I'm slightly more hardy and could cope without it.... but you know how it is.

On saturday night I persuaded her to switch it off to light the wood burner for the first time this winter/autumn. The remote thermostat unit we have said 20 degrees when i switched it off. Ten mins later I had a good fire going with wood that had been stacked up in the house in the house all year. An hour later the house temp was 22 degrees, and I had to open a window to vent some of the heat!

It`s cold here. :) This weather report is from our local online paper, the Orcadian Online, it gets updated today but the forecast is for actual snow this week!
I took the binbags down my track this morning and when I got in I had to thaw my hands out. Brr....

You really do have my sympathy being up there on Orkney as you've had a rotten summer, but now to start such cold weather SO early is unthinkable. I have a great friend on there too, but he'll cope .....or shrivel!!!!!

As I found out bu staying in a friends house it depends what KW rating the wood burner it is and if it has a back burner or not.

My friend has a 2.5 KW burner and yes heats the front room nicely but unsuccessful in heating the rest of the house (1960s urban). I was thinking of getting one but after seeing the performance semi, I will give it a miss.

I was under the impression it was going to heat the whole house but alas no. You defiantly notice the cold when you go into the hallway - I didnt take any measurement but it feels a good 10 5 degrees cooler, and it gets cooler the more you go upstairs . This is after about 2 hour burning.

    .

I was watching GMTV this morning and Andrea whotsername doing the weather. She issued a severe weather warning for Orkland and Shetney! I had to rewind it to make sure I was hearing right. :rotfl:

It's cold enough down here in Aberdeenshire. I hope you're not tooo cold. My son is on a rig 100 miles north of Shetland so I expect it's pretty nippy up there too!

Now you see that's just wasteful. I mean think of the wood! Do you think it grows on trees?!

We put our heating on this week, one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening just to take the slight chill out of the air seeing as we have a newborn. Will hold out on increasing the timer "on" for as long as poss but the way things are deteriorating outside it may not be too mush longer.
